Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 30 tenured or tenure-track faculty and 30+ full- and part-time non-tenure-track faculty. The department offers an undergraduate degree in mathematics with concentrations in business, computation, life sciences, physical sciences, secondary education, and statistics; an undergraduate degree in actuarial science; an undergraduate certificate program in sports analytics; and a master’s degree in mathematics with concentrations in college teaching and secondary teaching. The department currently has 250 undergraduate majors and 20+ graduate students. In fall 2026, the department moved into a newly renovated space with active learning classrooms, updated computer labs, and flexible spaces for working with students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This is a ten-month appointment. The lecturer will be expected to teach 30 credit hours per year, typically 12 credit hours in each of the fall and spring semesters and six credit hours in a summer session. Course delivery will be primarily in an asynchronous online format, although appropriate synchronous virtual office hours and help sessions are expected. The Lecturer may also be asked to teach synchronous or hybrid online sections as departmental need requires over time.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in department service by:
Delivering high-quality online instruction consistent with App State’s Teaching Quality Framework, attending to the learning environment, course design and implementation, and a reflective stance toward discipline and pedagogy.
Engaging in curriculum and pedagogical development for online courses, particularly in support of Business Calculus and the broader Flight Path program, including ongoing course design, assessment, and continuous improvement of the online learning experience.
Contributing to the ongoing assessment and continuous improvement of online course delivery.
Participating in departmental service and committee work as assigned in consultation with the chair, with particular attention to service that supports online and Flight Path initiatives.
