Primary Purpose of Department
The Public Services Unit coordinates and integrates library services for all members of the user community including students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, and community members. Overall, it ensures high quality, responsive, and continuously-improving customer service. The Research and Instructional Services Unit provides research and instructional support services, which facilitate and enhance our community’s ability to critically engage with information and create knowledge to meet intellectual, curricular, and professional goals. Public Services also consists of the Circulation & Reserves unit as well as the Resource Sharing and Access Services unit, which consists of Resource Sharing, Collections Maintenance, and the library’s Offsite Storage Facility. Public Services researches, plans, develops, recommends, and implements long- and short-term goals, best practices, standards, and principles, and innovative means for the provision of library public services to the UNC Charlotte community.

Library faculty are expected to collaborate within the Library and beyond in the performance of professional duties that may include, but are not limited to: selecting, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to materials; supporting teaching, learning, and research; providing outreach to the campus and community; and developing and maintaining digital and technological innovations.

Library faculty participate in scholarly research, creative endeavors, and professional activities to serve the Library, the University, and the information professions. Library faculty are strongly encouraged to pursue external funding for library-related initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively engage with academic programs in the College of Engineering, the Departments of Mathematics and Physics, other university programs, and external groups.
- Teach research instruction sessions for assigned subjects and academic programs.
- In collaboration with library and campus stakeholders, design, deliver, and assess instruction sessions and learning objects that integrate AI concepts within information literacy and critical thinking frameworks.
-Regularly investigate and assess AI technologies for their use in teaching, learning, and research
- Develop and promote effective and ethical research workflows using AI tools
- Provide guidance and leadership on AI best practices in teaching and research in collaboration with other librarians
- Develop appropriate instructional and informational aids for students, faculty, and staff. .
-Provide strategic support for collection development in assigned subject areas.
- Provide research and reference support for assigned subjects to students, faculty, and community patrons.
-Provide advanced research support for students and faculty, including but not limited to assisting in evidence synthesis, ethical use of artificial intelligence, and documenting the impact of University research.
-Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus.
- Communicate effectively and positively with individuals of varied backgrounds.
-Participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and instruction for first-year undergraduate students.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by the time selected applicant begins job.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
- Degree or significant coursework in one or more disciplines of Engineering, or professional experience working with engineering students and faculty in a research library setting.
- Two or more years of instruction or liaison experience in an academic research library.
- Knowledge of the research needs of students and faculty at an R1 institution.
- Knowledge of the structure, use, and preservation of information resources in assigned areas.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
-Able to work both collaboratively with a wide range of groups and independently
- Knowledge of relevant professional and technological issues in assigned areas.
- Ability to work effectively in an organization in which change is both essential and ongoing.
