What Your Job Will Be Like:
The ICF Development and Experiments group is seeking a Research & Development Electromechanical Technologist to work in the Sandia Pulsed Power Sciences Center as member of the Z Machine gas fill and cryogenic team.
The ICF Development and Experiments group leads the development and fielding of cryogenic and gas systems on the Z machine, the world's largest pulsed power generator. This facility conducts cutting edge research for the Department of Energy covering a range of topics relevant for Stockpile Stewardship. In this position you will be part of an experienced cryogenic/gas fill team responsible for a diverse cross section of duties from fielding and installing cryogenic and gas fill systems in the vacuum chamber of Z and to leading and planning research and development of new capabilities. There is a strong focus on implementing technology in novel ways to push the boundaries of science, with an emphasis on data quality and scientific understanding.
On any given day, you may be called to:
- Field cryogenic and gas fill capabilities in the Z Machine facility, working with a multi-disciplinary team of Technologists, Engineers and Scientists in a fast-paced and fluid environment to accomplish daily system preparation, installation, testing and operations; this includes wearing Tyvek and Respirators in Z's vacuum chamber
- Assemble, configure, modify, refurbish and repair systems in the laboratory test space and on the Z Machine
- Use measurement equipment and software to collect, process and analyze experimental data
- Work with the engineering and cryogenic/gas fill team to develop and implement new designs and modifications of cryogenic and gas fill systems.
- Support lab testing of cryogenic and gas fill hardware for the Z Machine Maintain documentation for system operational procedures and/or laboratory work planning and safety
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite. Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.
Salary Range:
$63,800 - $123,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- High School diploma required or equivalency
- Hands-on technical proficiency with an aptitude for assembly, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical systems
- Experience safely working with pressurized systems, including vacuum systems
- Ability to assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low voltage (12-24VDC) and control systems
- Ability to assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical systems
- Ability to support a flexible work schedule
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- DoE Q clearance to start
- Experience working safely with cryogenic systems.
- Experience reading schematics for building cabling and parts assembly
- Experience developing and executing test plans.
- Experience developing activity level work procedure
- Experience loading, assembling, and performing precise alignments on scientific equipment
- Experience working in a fast-paced dynamic work environment with flexible work hours
- Demonstrated ability working in a team environment with engineers
- Experience using LabVIEW, Microsoft Excel, Word and Teams software
About Our Team:
Department 1648 designs and performs High Energy Density Science Experiments on HED facilities. The majority of experiments are conducted at the Z facility. The department is accountable for experimental work in Pulsed Power fusion and application of novel target designs to achieve higher energy densities in pulsed power experiments. Higher energy densities enable new applications to Stockpile Stewardship with Pulsed Power and 1648 is responsible for fully taking advantage of this new opportunity.
