Job Description
Purpose of Role: The Department Chair assists the Dean in overseeing College of Nursing faculty in order to meet the tripartite mission of the college including teaching, research and creative/scholarly activity and professional and University service and public outreach. The Department Chair is responsible for oversight of promotion processes, faculty development programs, faculty recruitment and retention, faculty evaluation, faculty personnel actions, faculty governance, and initiatives pertaining to the faculty well-being for all campus sites. The Department Chair is a key member of the Dean’s leadership team and will provide strategic insight and assist the Dean in setting college goals. The Department Chair will also foster and maintain positive relationships with College and University leadership and community stakeholders including OUH and clinical site partners. Critical to the Chairperson’s success will be their ability to develop and articulate a clear vision and strategy for the department that aligns with the University of Oklahoma’s Lead On, University Strategic Plan.
Appointment: This is a full-time, 12-month in-person faculty appointment, Consecutive Term or Tenure-Track eligible, at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a 50% administrative position with faculty appointment commensurate with rank and scholarship.
Reporting Structure: The Department Chair reports directly to the Dean of the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing.
Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership in faculty development initiatives that foster faculty career progression
2. Establishes and implements faculty development initiatives for faculty career progression including one-on-one or group-based coaching for identifying mentoring needs and/or creating individualized professional development plans for faculty to address challenges and opportunities of teaching students, engaging in scholarship or research, participating in professional service, and other professional development needs.
· Provides guidance to faculty members in role and career development and goal attainment and in seeking promotion and/or tenure.
· Participates in course evaluation discussions each semester with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Academic Program Directors; with the goal of improving academic programs.
· Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Research to support programmatic research at the College.
· Establishes systems to monitor the impact of faculty development programs and mid-tenure review
· Develops mechanisms for recognizing teaching, research/scholarship and service accomplishments of the faculty and coordinates the identification of faculty for training and leadership opportunities.
3. Works with Academic Affairs; the Associate Dean for Research; and the Director of Clinical Affairs, Outreach, and Practice Innovation to create faculty workload plans.
· Works with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Academic Program Directors on teaching assignments.
· Works with the Associate Dean for Research on research productivity and scholarship.
· Conducts annual faculty evaluations, in collaboration with the Academic Program Directors, Assistant Deans, Associate Deans, and Dean.
4. Oversees the recruitment and hiring of department faculty.
- Works with leadership to identify priorities in strategic faculty recruitment and works collaboratively in the recruitment process.
- Oversees and supports the work of faculty search committees.
- Collaborates with Academic Program Directors in the hiring of adjunct faculty.
- Oversees the orientation of full-time and adjunct faculty to the goals, policies, and procedures of the College and University.
5. In collaboration with the Assistant Deans, Associate Deans, and Dean, creates and supports an environment that encourages faculty teaching, scholarship, service, and practice.
· Maintains ongoing communication with Academic Program Directors and relevant faculty leaders regarding faculty developmental needs in teaching, research, practice, and service.
· Formalizes faculty-mentoring process in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs Committee.
· Evaluates all faculty to ensure they are prepared academically and experientially for their positions and responsibilities.
6. In collaboration with Academic Program Directors, Assistant Deans, Associate Deans, and Dean, contributes to activities that support faculty work and retention.
· Actively contributes to activities related to Oklahoma Board of Nursing program approval reviews/reports and all University and national accreditation reviews/reports.
· Functions as the executive sponsor, writing support letters for faculty going up for promotion; drawing information from key personnel.
· Supports faculty dossier/portfolio preparation for mid-rank review, tenure, and promotion.
· Analyzes trends in faculty goal attainment, identifies trends and issues inhibiting faculty success, and proposes action steps to remedy or enhance department faculty development and retention.
7. Manages and ensures successful faculty award and recognition processes including College, University, and State Higher Education Awards, Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Sigma Theta Tau, and other professional society awards.
8. Works collaboratively with the Dean and Associate Deans to develop, implement and evaluate academic programs as they relate to the College’s master plan.
9. Collaborates with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to ensure the timely response to student complaints, grievances, appeals, and other academic issues per OUHC and College policy and procedures.
10. Represents the College of Nursing on University committees.
11. Participates in teaching, scholarly and clinical activities; and service commensurate with criteria for faculty rank.
12. Serves as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team.
13. Other Duties as assigned by the Dean.
Minimum Qualifications:
Licensure: Must be eligible for or hold current registered professional nurse (RN) license for the State of Oklahoma
Education: Terminal Degree (Preferably in Nursing or Health Related Field)
Experience:
· 3 years higher education teaching
· 5 years progressive administrative experience
· 3 years administrative experience in higher education
· A record of scholarship, (extramural funding preferred)
· Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Professor

· Demonstrates ability to recruit and retain outstanding faculty, work effectively with leadership, effectively delegate.
· Flexible and capable of responding to multiple demands in a time-sensitive manner.
· Ability to exercise astute judgment in all matters related to faculty development activities and monitoring career progression.
· Proficient with MS Office applications, learning management software, and other technology used in teaching, research, and practice.
