Job Description
Primary Purpose of PositionThe Department of Computer Systems Technology in the College of Science and Technology at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for the Cabin Road Endowed faculty position in Artificial Intelligence, with a preferred start date of August 2026.
The appointment is anticipated at the Full Professor or Associate Professor level.
The candidate must demonstrate exceptional teaching, distinguished scholarly accomplishments, significant service, and a strong record of funding activities. He/She is expected to lead high-quality instructional and research initiatives; actively support student success through effective mentorship and advising; and make significant contributions to the growth and enhancement of academic programs. The successful candidate will develop and sustain a nationally and internationally recognized research program in Artificial Intelligence and build a world-class interdisciplinary AI core that advances the University’s strategic research directions in areas such as cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, generative AI, natural language processing, robotics, and game design.
In addition, the candidate will collaborate with cluster hires and other faculty colleagues to advance interdisciplinary initiatives; establish and sustain a vigorous, externally funded research program in AI; direct the research activities of both undergraduate and graduate students; and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional responsibilities include service to the department, the College, the University, and the broader community; contributing to recruitment and student engagement efforts; supporting curriculum development and enhancement; and actively participating in scholarly activities.
The candidate will also contribute to ABET accreditation processes and continuous program assessment. Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina A&T is a public land-grant, high-research activity university that enrolls over 15,275 students. The University is committed to dedicated teaching and learning, scholarly and creative research, and effective engagement and public service.
The College of Science and Technology (COST) enrolls 2,514 students. CoST integrates science, mathematics, and technology to advance knowledge and prepare the next generation of science and technology leaders. The College embraces the mission of the University as a land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM by expanding new frontiers in science, creating novel technologies, developing innovative approaches to STEM teaching and learning, and formulating scientific and technological solutions that lead to transformative social and economic development. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the Applied Science Technology PhD Program. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.
The Computer Systems Technology (CST) Department at North Carolina A&T State University has 10 full-time faculty members and offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. The department has a current enrollment of 477 undergraduate students, 77 master’s students, and 12 doctoral students. Faculty conduct research in cyber-physical systems, system security, machine learning in edge, bioelectric heart and brain monitoring, autonomous vehicle control, knowledge and discovery in big data, and wireless communications. The department has attracted funding from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the Department of Education, as well as various industries to support research and education. Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in AI, computer science, computer engineering, information technology or closely related field by date of appointment
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Preference will be given to applicants with a strong research record or professional work experience in AI or related fields.
