Qualifications:
Internship (KINES 495) will provide students the opportunity to complete fieldwork in an area of interest that is in line with the department's mission and student's professional interests. This course requires students to directly apply the knowledge acquired in the academic classroom within the appropriate professional setting. Through this application, students are then able to develop new practical skills based on their existing theoretical framework. They are also able to identify personal strengths that will ultimately guide them into specialized fields within the profession such as marketing, media relations, recreation management, strength and conditioning, etc. Finally, it provides students the opportunity to enhance the professional network so essential for access to and movement within the Kinesiology professions. This course is a requirement for Sport Management and Health Promotion majors, and may be taken as an elective for Exercise Science majors.
This course meets as a class two to three times during the semester as determined by the instructor. Additionally, the instructor meets one-on-one with students regularly. Students complete coursework using the College's online learning management system (Canvas) as well as a predetermined number of hours at their internship site.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Evaluate probable career paths; Describe the qualifications, specific job requirements, and working conditions for the positions in a career path; Compare knowledge learned in the classroom to its application in the field; Understand the need for flexibility and creativity in the application of knowledge; Initiate the development of a personal, professional network; Apply basic concepts to appropriate problems in the work setting; Develop a better understanding of the work ethic and skills required for success in the field.
This course will be taught in person on the Moraga campus during the 2026 Spring term. Class times to be determined at the beginning of the term.
In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.
The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have a recent publication record in the field, or a Master's degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have at least five years of current, relevant professional experience. Candidates must have the ability and willingness to develop ongoing relationships and internship opportunities with exercise facilities and sport teams at a variety of levels. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multicultural environment. Preference will be given to those who have taught the course or KINES 195.
Candidates must reside in California.
The salary range for this position is $7,447 - 10,308 (3 units) and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
