Job Description

The Electrical Safety Specialist supports the Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) Directorate by serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in electrical safety with potential to serve as an SME in other occupational safety programs. This role plays a critical part in the implementation and continual improvement of electrical safety programs governed under 10 CFR 851, contributing directly to Argonne’s mission of enabling safe, world-class science.

Reporting to the Electrical Safety Program Lead, the specialist may manage one or more core electrical safety programs, such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) or the Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program, while supporting Laboratory-wide initiatives that enhance electrical hazard awareness, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

The role provides critical support by developing and maintaining policies, program descriptions, and implementation plans. It requires maintaining up-to-date knowledge of applicable codes and regulations and making informed recommendations to improve programs based on evolving standards, best practices, and assessment findings.

As an electrical safety SME, the position supports implementation of the electrical safety program, serves on the Electrical Safety Committee, and delivers both classroom and hands-on training in electrical safety work practices. This role also includes close collaboration with National User Facilities, Research Organizations, and Operational Units throughout the Laboratory. A key focus of this position is supporting the broader 10 CFR 851 Occupational Safety Portfolio, which includes several critical safety programs within the ESH Directorate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Programmatic Oversight:
    • Support the development, implementation, and periodic review of assigned electrical safety programs.
    • Maintain and update program documentation including procedures, training materials, and audit tools.
    • Collaborate with line organizations, facilities staff, and researchers to ensure effective implementation of electrical safety policies.
    • Support and Facilitate engagement, growth, and oversight of divisional appointed Electrical Safety Officers to assist with local dissemination of electrical safety program compliance and understanding.
  • Subject Matter Expertise:
    • Serve as an electrical safety SME to support compliance with NFPA 70E, NEC, NESC, OSHA, and 10 CFR 851.
    • Participate in and support hazard assessments for AC and DC systems, including high-voltage and research applications.
    • Provide interpretation of codes and standards to clarify requirements and support work planning and control.
    • Serve as a SME in other identified Occupational Safety Programs as identified by OS Leader
  • Training & Engagement:
    • Contribute to the development and delivery of electrical safety training (e.g., QEW, LOTO).
    • Assist in the creation of web-based and instructor-led course content.
    • Support communication of safety expectations and lessons learned to Laboratory staff and leadership.
  • Risk & Incident Analysis:
    • Conduct or support field walkthroughs, risk assessments, and electrical safety inspections.
    • Participate in investigations of electrical incidents, contributing to root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Program Collaboration:
    • Actively participate in the Electrical Safety Committee and contribute to cross-functional ESH initiatives.
    • Interface with operational, user facility, and research stakeholders to integrate electrical safety into day-to-day operations.

Position Requirements

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, NEC, OSHA electrical safety regulations, and DOE 10 CFR 851.
  • Experience supporting electrical safety in research, utility, industrial, or laboratory environments.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, work planning documents, and regulatory standards.
  • Experience implementing or supporting electrical safety programs, including assessments and audits.
  • Proficiency in delivering classroom, hands-on, and online training.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze incidents and develop actionable improvements.
  • Strong communication skills; able to convey safety issues and solutions to varied audiences, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to evaluate and monitor safety program implementation through work planning documents, procedures, and facility records.
  • Competency in using digital tools for reporting, documentation, and tracking findings including but not limited to Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Ability to prepare inspection records, track metrics, and generate reports related to electrical safety performance.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, decision-making ability, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Master’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) is a requirement or the ability to obtain within one-year of hire.
  • International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) Electrical Inspector Certification is a requirement or the ability to obtain within one-year of hire.

Preferred Skills and Certifications:

  • Experience delivering or supporting QEW or LOTO training programs.
  • Experience with electrical safety audits or regulatory assessments.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional (ability to obtain safety professional certifications listed or other for the role)

The expected hiring range for this position is $83,264.00 - $131,343.03.
