Qualifications:
COUN 703: School Counseling Practicum and Action Research Methods (3 units)
This course is designed to give School Counseling (PPS-SC) students practical experience in problem-solving and action research in a school setting. Students will spend 50 hours in 1-2 school sites shadowing school counselors and identifying and exploring an actual, school-based problem or issue related to school counseling. Using the principles of collaborative action research, students will work in teams to design and implement an assessment tool that addresses the identified problem or issue. Students will spend class time processing their shadowing experiences, learning about collaborative action research, and working together to find ways to approach the identified problem or issue. Students will be mentored throughout the semester by 2nd- and 3rd-year students in the field experience class. Final team projects will be presented in the field experience class at the end of the semester and at the SMC Student Research Conference & Showcase.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Human Development, or a related field. Candidates must have experience teaching at the graduate level in Counseling, Psychology, or a related area, or at least 3 years of experience as a practicing clinician (e.g., MFT, PCC, clinical or counseling psychologist), school-based mental health professional (e.g., school counselor or school psychologist), or counselor in a higher education setting (e.g., college/university).

Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Counseling or Psychology is highly desirable. Current license in Marriage & Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling, or Psychology, or Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling, Social Work, or School Psychology. Familiarity with principles of collaborative action research A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, multicultural/international competence, social justice, clinical expertise, and familiarity with counseling theory and practice.
