What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security? You could be the engineer we are seeking to lead and perform experimental activities and laboratory operations in both the Centrifuge and Climatic Test Laboratories. In this position, you will have an active role in the development and execution of a wide array of experiments to support a range of customers from across the laboratory. Breadth of activities will include high-quality thermal, altitude, humidity, corrosion, and acceleration testing of components and subsystems. Successful candidate will perform innovative research and development experiments to push the limits of combined environments testing. The position will also require working closely with our mission customers, equipment manufacturers, and Sandia facilities team as part of maintaining lab stewardship. For all work, rigorous implementation of work planning and control processes are expected to assure safe, secure, and high-quality operations.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Interact with mission customers at all stages of environmental testing. (Experimental design, development, planning, execution, data collection, and documentation).
  • Lead, perform, and support climatic and centrifuge experiments.
  • Lead in identification and implementation of technical laboratory improvements.
  • Maintain performance of climatic and centrifuge test equipment.
  • Develop research projects and publish technical work.
  • Maintain Environment, Safety &Health (ES&H) documentation and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with other Organization and Group team members to plan and perform experimental activities.
  • Handle and maintain equipment calibration.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field
  • Experience in a research and development environment
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment, data acquisition systems, and/or data analysis/documentation software
  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with thermal, humidity, altitude, and/or acceleration testing methodologies
  • Experience with ES&H documentation processes and familiarity with Work Planning & Controls processes
  • Experience with high consequence safety operations, explosive and radioactive related processes
  • Active DOE Q clearance

About Our Team:

The Integrated Components Testing Department 1527 is part of the Engineering Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. Our center is the steward of engineering mechanics for Sandia, and we are dedicated to solving our customer’s most pressing and important national security problems. Our department specializes in experimental technologies related to structural mechanics and mechanics of materials. With our state of the art experimental technologies, technical expertise, and analytical capabilities in sister departments, we provide integrated customer solutions in the following areas: mechanical characterization of materials, components, and structures in normal or abnormal environments, development and application of state-of-the-art experimental and diagnostic techniques for scientific and mission impacts, and integration of analytical, computational, and experimental efforts for engineering solutions to national security problems. Our mission is to use research-development-application (R-D-A) spectrum for physical discovery, model development and validation, and qualification and acceptance for nuclear weapons, defense, energy, and other applications.

Posting Duration:
