What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated person who is passionate about building a safe and healthy work culture to join our dynamic Nuclear Facilities and Applied Technologies team as the Engineering Program/Project Lead (EPPL). The program has impact and visibility laboratory wide and across the NNSA/DOE complex.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations at the facility and requires application of a broad technical skill set to facilitate the development and execution of operating and maintenance procedures for the safe and secure operations
  • Provides leadership and tactical planning for execution of projects and applies engineering or other technical knowledge to achieve project objectives and deliverables to execute procedures and processes for the disposition of legacy nuclear materials, including hands-on and remote manipulator processing of radioactive materials
  • Provides technical or engineering support to one or more aspects of the program or project to identify potential risks, develop risk mitigation strategies and recommend risk acceptance or avoidance for executing procedures for reactor fuel health initiatives that will require enhanced facility design and capabilities.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or relevant STEM field plus 5 years relevant experience in the operations of nuclear facilities
  • Experience with project management practices for technical work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope
  • Must be able to enter rigorous training program culminating in certification as an Auxiliary Hot Cell Facility (AHCF) operator and designation as Facility Supervisor
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to make decisions requiring scientific, engineering, and programmatic judgment
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to certify as a nuclear facility operator
  • Ability to perform work in accordance with procedures in a highly regulated work environment
  • An advanced degree in a technical field
  • Experience working at a DOE nuclear facility
  • Familiarity with DOE nuclear facility requirements
  • Familiarity with RCRA requirements
  • Experience in the operation of hot cells and experience in the performance of radiological work
  • Existing DOE clearance

About Our Team:

This department provides the operational management of the Auxiliary Hot Cell Facility (AHCF), and the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF), and the Low Dose Rate Irradiation Facility (LDRIF) in TA-III. The GIF and the LDRIF are used to provide experiment support to a wide variety of experimenters within and external to the Laboratories. The AHCF is the key Category 3 nuclear facility for repackaging and disposition of waste and materials that require the rigor in operations of a nuclear facility, as well as the safety provided by the shielding and containment. Another important aspect of this department is the implementation of the Integrated Work Management Program for all operations, maintenance, and processes for Organization 01380.
