The Advisor, Risk and Quality under the direction of the Manager of Quality works to ensure patient and staff safety, respond to claims of clinical malpractice, address patient complaints, and comply with federal and state regulations. While their primary responsibility is to protect the hospital’s interests, the Risk Advisor’s efforts contribute significantly to the quality of patient care. The Risk Advisor works with all employees to ensure consistency and reliability in policies, procedures and treatment protocols that govern the high quality, compassionate and safe delivery of all patient care provided at the Center. The Risk Advisor will facilitate operational and process improvements identified through event reporting, participation in safety committees, risk assessments, and other data collection efforts. The activities include the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of loss exposures. The Risk Advisor identifies, analyzes, and acts upon actual and potential exposures to the organization with a goal of improved patient safety and protection of the organization’s assets. This is also accomplished through education and collaboration with all levels of the organization. This position requires high level communication and analytical skills, particularly in dealing with sensitive clinical information and clinical events. The Risk Advisor must maintain strict confidentiality of information that is frequently of a highly sensitive nature and/or protected under state and federal law. The Risk Advisor is responsible for reviewing incident reports and conducting investigations of complaints or reports related to the treatment of or alleged injuries to patients or visitors and/or other incidents.

The successful candidate:

  • Works daily with other staff to assess potential risks.

  • Develop systems and processes to improve the monitoring and control of risk.

  • Reviews changes in legislation and regulations.

  • Review all reports of risk incidents on a timely basis and evaluates them to identify those that have actual or potential patient injury and follow up, as necessary.

  • Receive phone calls about patient complaints or accusations of abuse or negligence.

  • Interact with patients and families on complaints of substandard care, injury, and other concerns in collaboration with nursing, providers, leadership, and patient advocates.

  • Ensures the thorough review of medical discrepancies, analysis of data and follow up actions to improve patient care and patient safety.

  • Investigate incidents/adverse events to identify potential or actual claims and report them to Compliance and/or Executive Team Member.

  • Collaborate with Quality, Patient Safety and Patient Advocates to ensure that incidents are properly reported to regulatory agencies as required.

  • Participate in committees dedicated to improving patient, employee and visitor safety and satisfaction.

  • Perform and assist with RCA process when appropriate and/or requested by Quality/Patient Safety.

  • Rounds on patient units and departments to demonstrate that the Risk Advisor is an accessible and approachable resource for providers, nurses, leadership, and other personnel.

  • Collaborate with the collection of information requested from legal counsel.

  • Identify risks to the hospital.

  • Conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for new and high-risk programs and procedures.

  • Review past incidents and claims, local and national hospital-related incident or risk data and statistics.

  • Monitor the actions of employees to check for issues of compliance with existing policies and procedures.

  • Provide risk assessments about patient or visitor safety.

  • Reports findings and solutions to immediate issues, as well as plans for potential future issues or emergencies, to hospital management. Answers questions and helps develop new policies and procedures.

  • Collect and analyze risk data and complete Risk Management reports to present to the appropriate managers and committees.

  • Develops reports and presentations of incidents, risk management and loss prevention techniques.

  • Incident reports are reviewed daily, and an investigation is made into the nature and potential prevention of the incident.

  • Adverse events are identified and investigated on a timely basis to determine if they meet the criteria for reporting. Prepares and /or ensures proper reporting to appropriate agencies and governing bodies as appropriate and/or required.

  • Reviews and has access to all medical records for patients as needed.

  • Provides status reports on all compliance matters related to risk and patient safety for the Executive Team Members as requested.

  • Prepares quarterly reports for the Executive Team Members and Quality Committee detailing compliance initiatives related to risk and safety throughout the year, as well as recommendations for improvements/changes in the overall compliance program.

  • Review medical records for liability issues.

  • Collaborates with leadership to uncover and address potential risks.

  • Assists with the on-going process of validating that policies and procedures are followed across the organization.

  • Assists with policy development.

  • Ensures follow through of identified improvements and reporting to the Quality Committee.

  • Ensures appropriate responses to patient complaints.

  • Provides input into improvement priorities based on appropriate risk assessments and other data sources.

  • Speaks directly with staff about risk.

  • Develop an education plan in collaboration with the education department utilizing classroom training, online training platforms and other techniques.

  • Educate staff and providers on risk management strategies to mitigate loss and improve reporting in a just culture.

  • Assist education department and leadership with educating employees about risk, liability and risk management policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management

  • Three years direct experience in acute healthcare risk management

  • Knowledgeable of HIPAA and ADA

  • Program Management experience preferred

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $36.71 - $60.46 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
