Job Description

The X-ray Science Division (XSD) enables world-class research using x-rays by developing cutting edge x-ray instrumentation and techniques; pursues research in the physical, chemical, environmental, and materials sciences. To accomplish this mission, it fully operates 43 beamlines at the APS, and jointly operates an additional beamline in partnership with Argonne’s Center for Nanoscale materials.

This Beamline Scientist position in the Surface Scattering and Microdiffraction (SSM) group will be responsible for:

  • Planning, implementing, and leading synchrotron radiation research at the new Coherent High-Energy X-ray (CHEX) beamline.

  • Designing, constructing, and operating synchrotron equipment in support of x-ray surface scattering and general x-ray diffraction experiments using the newly upgraded high brightness x-ray source.

  • Independently developing scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for x-ray diffraction and coherent x-ray diffraction applications; this includes development and implementation of advanced data analysis algorithms.

  • Reporting relevant results in an appropriate form including scientific journals.

Position Requirements

  • Skill in experimental physics to develop scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for x-ray diffraction

  • Skill in understanding abstract concepts and synthesizing results within the current experimental and theoretical frameworks

  • Skill in advanced data analysis algorithms and methods

  • Skill in written and oral communications.

  • Ability to interact with a variety of visiting outside user groups to obtain high quality experimental results.

  • Knowledge of x-ray diffraction methods, coherent x-ray diffraction, film growth, x-ray physics and applications

  • Knowledge of synchrotron radiation, x-ray optics, detectors, and precision instrumentation.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to understand, value, and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

  • Bachelors and 5+ years’ experience, Masters and 3+ years’ experience, PhD and 0+ years’ experience, or equivalent

  • The required level of scientific knowledge and sophistication is normally associated with a Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, materials science, or related discipline.
