Summary

The selected individual will perform functional experiments with patient-derived models (in vitro and in vivo) of brain tumors. The ideal candidate will have minimum five years of full-time work experiences in mouse work in a biomedical research laboratory. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing transgenic mouse colonies and immunocompromised mouse colonies and will be responsible for supervising the activities of trainees and other staff in the the use of animal models. This position will therefore require strong experimental and mentoring skills, and expertise.

Job Duties

  • Independently plans, directs and conducts research experiments in accordance to overall project trajectory.
  • Handles breeding, weaning, collecting genotyping samples from transgenic mouse colonies
  • Monitors mouse health, closely watch for brain tumor or flank tumor development
  • Dissects to harvest samples (tumor, spinal cord and other mouse tissues)
  • Performs injections (tumor cells and drugs) when needed.
  • Independently evaluates, processes, and analyzes experiment data to inform users
  • Assists mouse users with in vivo bioluminescent imaging when necessary
  • Prepares and record harvested tumor or mouse tissue samples for follow-up pathology work
  • Provides technical training and assistance to trainees, students and new technicians within the team
  • Routinely communicates with mouse users within the team regarding mouse work
  • Presents data to the PI and group meetings
  • Drafts standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the lab
  • Maintains lab database of patient-derived models
  • Conducts experiments with patient-derived models of brain tumors, both in vitro and orthotopically in vivo
  • Develop new techniques specifically associated with the Mouse Hospital protocols
  • Develops and implements new animal modeling systems as required to keep our methodologies at a cutting-edge level

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Life Science/Biomedical Sciences
  • Five or more years of mouse handling experience with expertise in intravenous, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, as well as blood collection and tissue dissection techniques
  • Experience with mouse health monitor is highly preferred
  • Experience with other procedures (e.g., cardiac puncture, perfusion) is preferred but not required
  • Experience handling multiple biological samples at any given time, and following standard operational protocols (SOPS)
  • Proactive, highly organized, willing to communicate and help, and able to efficiently prioritize work in response to multiple demands.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Detailed and precise record keeping are essential skills.
