Job Description

You are invited to apply for a cultural research specialist position in EVS to conduct environmental studies on the effects of human activities on cultural resources (archaeological and historical) and cultural landscapes and report the analyses and conclusions from these studies in technical reports, environmental impact statements, environmental assessments, and other documents. Frequently work as team or project leader on assignments related to cultural resources.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data to characterize the impacts of projects and/or climate change on cultural resources; develop appropriate mitigation plans for sites or resources affected.
  • Develop and submit scopes of work for archaeological contractors and review and evaluate proposals.
  • Manage and oversee contracts, including job safety analysis, contract modifications, fieldwork, and deliverables.
  • Review technical materials for quality and accuracy and ensure compliance with project requirements, schedules, and budgets.
  • Support archaeological investigations by planning and conducting field activities, analyzing data, conducting laboratory analysis, writing reports, and curating final deliverables.
  • Prepare quality written materials detailing the analyses, findings, and conclusions of scientific work for use in technical reports, environmental assessments, regulatory compliance documents, and journal papers, books, or reports.
  • Testify as an expert witness at public hearings if required.
  • When appropriate, actively participate in seminars, conferences, and other scientific meetings.
  • Enhance the skills and recognition of Argonne’s Department of Natural and Sociocultural Systems by writing and providing peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Enhance department’s overall workforce quality through participation in professional development or technical meetings to maintain an understanding of the current state-of-the science.
  • Support marketing and program development efforts by supporting PIs/PMs in their development and marketing of new initiatives (e.g., input to proposal development).
  • Coordinate cultural resource team activities as they relate to project tasks.

Position Requirements

  • Must meet qualifications set forth in the Secretary of the Interior Standards and Guidelines
  • Social science research skills including knowledge of historical research, archaeological techniques, and regional cultural history
  • Analyzing data and formulating sound conclusions that will withstand the intense scrutiny of professional peers and legal experts
  • Geospatial analysis and proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Knowledge of archaeological survey practice, data recovery techniques, and curation standards
  • Effective oral and written communications, including experience in the development of statements of work for a broad array of sponsors and record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues and sponsors, including the ability to effectively lead and coordinate team activities as they relate to project tasks
  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws and documentation procedures
  • Knowledge of the NEPA process
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Experience in developing or implementing machine learning solutions.
  • Experience in computer-based modeling and simulation development, including but not limited to predictive modeling, agent based modeling, and large language modeling.
  • Business acumen

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD1: Bachelor’s and 0+ years of experience
  • RD2: Bachelor’s and 2+ years of experience, or a Masters degree, or equivalent
