ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer’s entire operational ecosystem and its ability to deliver therapies is undeniably dependent on information technology systems and in particular, the applications and data assets that service each of the therapeutic and enabling business functions.  Digital Hosting Solutions represents the collection of infrastructure technologies both on-premises and in the cloud that service those applications and data assets, ultimately enabling Pfizer’s core mission to deliver healthcare solutions for patients.

The Linux, UNIX, Discipline Lead  is responsible for the design, engineering, operationalization, and continuous improvement of Pfizer’s global portfolio for Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, Amazon Linux 2, J2E and Webhosting solutions.  This role is a subject matter expert in this field with a broad range of general IT knowledge in a global and diverse enterprise setting.

The role will have primary engineering responsibility over Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, and J2E Middleware, Execution of engineering, Service Life Cycle management, and Operational processes for design, development, qualification, and transition of solutions from concept to production. The Linux, UNIX, Discipline Lead  is an experienced and influential colleague who will guide the members of the Linux, UNIX, Discipline Lead  and build a strong community around practice/discipline competency.  The lead will ensure clarity of roles, and curate development paths for every member of the practice.  Ultimately, this role will partner directly with DHS Product & Service Owners to ensure the timely delivery of prioritized engineering outcomes.

The ideal candidate will challenge traditional norms within the Pfizer infrastructure environment and bias heavily towards a software-defined paradigm that results in all infrastructure being delivered as code via lightweight, repeatable, scalable, and cost-efficient designs.  Strong partnerships are expected with key domain areas within EP&S including supporting product teams (e.g., Operating System, Network, Database) and service areas (e.g., Global Information Security, Compliance) and with teams outside of EP&S including Digital Architecture and the Digital Creation Centers.

This position requires the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop, and coach others, and oversee & guide the work of colleagues and contractors to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business value.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set the Practice/Discipline vision, define the scope, measures of success, and alignment with dependent DHS Product and/or Service squads.

  • Develop the practice/discipline organization through the attraction, retention, and cultivation of practice member talent.  Ensure consistency of technology and Agile-oriented skills across the team.

  • Support DHS Product and/or Service Ownership in the design & engineering, implementation, operationalization, improvement, and ongoing lifecycle management of Linux Operating system such as RHEL, Amazon Linux 2, SUSE, Solaris Operating system, J2E Webhosting, and other continuous development / integration products.

  • Establish the practice/discipline operating model inclusive of the approaches and tools utilized to iterate engineering and development outcomes at scale.  Establish success criteria and regularly report to DHS leadership on the efficiency of the practice/discipline and on opportunities to improve.

  • Lead designs that are “fit-for-purpose” and wholly and efficiently deliver the outcomes that are defined by the DHS Product and/or Service Owner Groups.  Maintain strict alignment to established security and compliance guidelines in the qualification of new engineering solutions.

  • Ensure that designs are “fit-for-use” and achieve not only the desired outcomes but deliver an experience that is delightful (fast and easy).  Manage the transition of engineered solutions to steady-state operations (Digital Command Operations) and ensure support viability through appropriate Confluence-based documentation, effective handovers, training, and assistance as required.

  • Apply a DevSecOps approach to engineering that embeds security into each design, utilizes a defined and standardized pipeline for code release, makes significant use of automation particularly in testing, and biases towards repeatability and ease of go-forward maintenance with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) paradigm using Terraform, CloudFormation, Python, Rest, APIs.

  • Maintain technical ownership over Linux Operating system such as RHEL, Amazon Linux 2, SUSE, Solaris Operating system, J2E Webhosting other continuous development / integration products and third party layered products such as Centrify, Veritas…and define and manage the organizational policies in accordance with Hosting Security and Compliance teams.  Establish a framework that enables maximum scalability while also ensuring ease of management.

  • Partner closely with Digital Hosting Solutions Product Owners, and Practice areas including Hosting Security, Compute, Storage, Data Protection Networking Engineering in the architectural design of Linux, Solaris, Kubernetes, Containers technology capabilities.  Continuously evaluate the health of our capabilities while assessing new features that may offer an improved experience. 

  • Be the leading subject matter expert on Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, Amazon Linux2 and Kubernetes Containers J2E, Webhosting technology at Pfizer.  Participate regularly in ideation/design stage processes with Digital Architecture and Digital Hosting Product Owners in the translation of business outcomes to technology capabilities.  Be comfortable with sharing knowledge and teaching colleagues from across the Digital organization.

  • Manage external partnerships with key service providers and strategic partners to ensure consistent delivery of services in alignment with Pfizer’s Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, and J2E Webhosting technology strategy and in accordance with established commercial agreements.  Address any systemic issues in service delivery to ensure ongoing operational viability.

  • Maintain contemporary Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, Amazon Linux2 and Kubernetes, EKS Containers, J2E, Webhosting technology intelligence through an active network of key strategic partnerships and advisors, ensuring that Pfizer stays abreast of the latest trends in technologies and market shifts.  Continuously evaluate new capabilities and provide guidance on where investments should be made.

  • Promote ideas and innovations for Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, Amazon Linux2 J2E Webhosting by taking measured risks and articulating the vision and plan to achieve desired outcomes such as reducing operational cycle time.

  • Mentor and guide colleagues in Linux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, and J2E Webhosting technology to grow their effectiveness.  Coach colleagues for individual development planning.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical/engineering discipline.

  • 7+ years of experience in an enterprise IT setting, preferably one in a highly regulated industry such as banking/financial or healthcare/pharmaceutical. 

  • Demonstrated experience in an agile work environment possessing qualities such as a collaborative mindset, adaptability to change, and a proactive problem-solving approach.

  • Expert-level knowledge of and expertise with Linux, Solaris Operating system such as RedHat, Amazon Linux 2, J2E Webhosting other continuous development / integration products and third party layered products such as Centrify, Veritas…

  • Demonstrated experience with software development frameworks such as Agile/Scrum/Waterfall, DevSecOps and programming interfaces including RESTful Web Services, XML, and JSON.  Prior usage of automated testing in the context of infrastructure-as-code delivery is highly desired.

  • Strong general IT knowledge including an understanding of large-scale distributed systems architectures, relational & non-relational databases, multi-tier architectures, content delivery networks, system performance tuning, data protection (backup) technologies, and disaster recovery planning & failover strategies.

  • Strong communicative skills and the ability to simplify complex planning details into business operational terms in an international environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Ability to communicate relevant technical information about these platforms effectively to audiences ranging from Technical Subject Matter Experts to Business Unit Application staffs to Senior Corporate Leaders.

  • Experience with provisioning technologies forLinux, Solaris, RHEL, SUSE, J2EWebhosting. Need to have experience with unattended installs, bare metal HW provisioning and Patch management software.

  • In depth understanding of each platform’s lifecycle processes and the ability to relate and implement those lifecycle concepts to the hardware and software associated with those platforms.

  • SAN storage background to be able to define connection strategies for systems to storage frames. This will include knowledge of multi-pathing, disk mirrors, BCVs and snap mirrors.

  • Background with Cloud Endure, V to V and P to V migrations of Linux /UNIX Servers. Must also have knowledge of data transfer technology such as SRDF and file level data movement.

  • Strong background with Centrify and Active directory permissions, policies, and groups. Must have in-depth knowledge of file level permissions.

  • Must be able to take high level technical requirement and translate them into concrete system settings to meet Compliance and Audit requirements. 

  • Proficiency in the use of the MS Office suite including Word, Excel and Power Point as well as other standard business tools such as Visio, MS Project, Acrobat, etc.

  • Ability to understand and use client and web based applications in support of standard processes, i.e. Service Manager, Ariba, etc.

  • Fluent in Python, Ansible, BigFix Relevance scripts for managing Linux, UNIX Servers environments. 

  • Experience with deploying cloud native services using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using GoCloud automation, Terraform, Ansible, JavaScript, Python, AWS APIs.

  • Evaluation, design and integration of  software solutions for core operating system offerings, layered products, custom interfaces and middleware software solutions into the production environment.  This includes hands on product pilots, proof of concept, Engineering tasks and product benchmarks.

  • Ability to develop BiGFix fixlet, tasks, and baselines for automated deployments.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work 24x7 to address various issues that occur after hours.

  • Ability to work weekends in support of software implementations, security updates, and software installations.

  • Ability to work long hours under pressure due to changes and unexpected events, problems or challenges occur. 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

This role will interface daily with Digital Hosting Solutions Product Owners, and Practice areas including Hosting Security, Compute, Storage, Networking, and others.  The role will foster and maintain closer working relationships with Global Information Security, Compliance and Digital Command Operations.  Additionally, this role is expected to collaborate regularly with Digital Creation Centers and Digital Architecture teams.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $131 200,00 to $218 600,00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 17,5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
