Job Summary
This position will be housed in the University of Utah, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Epidemiology’s Program for Addiction Research, Clinical Care, Knowledge and Advocacy (PARCKA) https://medicine.utah.edu/internal-medicine/epidemiology/parcka.

The incumbent will provide professional counseling services. Therapy activities include individual, group and couples counseling. May be responsible for developing program criteria for area of specialization such as couples or addictive behavior counseling. May be responsible for supervising the work of Certified Professional Counselors, Interns, or other caseworkers.

Essential Functions
Assess and assist participants in medical, substance use, housing, and access to medical care.
Develops and coordinates treatment plans tailored to the individual, social circumstances, substance use and personal goals/desires.
Adheres to all aspects of a research protocol, complying with regulations and procedures.
May explain and obtain informed consent.
Conducts research assessments, including structured assessments of sensitive topics with high-risk populations.
Answers patient queries and maintains research records in compliance with regulations.
Determines visit windows from protocol, schedules subject visits and sends visit reminders to help retain them in the study and prevent study attrition.
Ensures study visits and procedures do not conflict with existing schedules.
Review medical records for patient data and complete data entry process for study using various databases.
May travel to a variety of sites both within and outside the University campus to obtain data.
Attend research meetings with team members and investigators.

Problem Solving

Working independently, this position has the authority to provide individual, group and couples counseling. Creativity and flexibility is essential in assessing an appropriate treatment for various levels of behavioral and emotional difficulties.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in a Professional Counseling field from an accredited school or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); Current licensure to practice as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the State of Utah; Demonstrated human relations and effective verbal and written communication skills, and; The proven ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, problem solve and resolve conflicts for individuals, couples, and groups.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Care is appropriate to the population served.
Preferences
Experience with clients that have developmental disabilities is preferred.

This position is responsible for providing care to the adult population.
