What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D manager to lead the Explosives Applications Laboratory, Department. This department operates in the Coyote Test Field on Kirtland Air Force Base and specializes in the design of energetic devices, experimental validation of energetic device performance, interior and terminal ballistic effects, and high-power laser effects research. This team develops a variety of explosive-based solutions focusing on shaped charge design, explosive welding, internal/terminal ballistics, as well as miniaturization and optimization of explosive systems for novel applications to solve challenges faced by our customers which includes other national labs, Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE), and industry partners. You will also team with peer managers to conduct operations at the other explosive ranges and laboratories including, Thunder Range, and Z-Machine. We serve a diverse group of program areas both internal and external to the Labs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead the high performing, highly dedicated, and mission-passionate team in the conduct of national security explosive testing operations.
  • Lead the team in research, development, testing, and engineering excellence.
  • Manage and oversee high-consequence activity level work, including explosive tests, ballistic tests, high power laser operations, fabrication and industrial activities, and training exercises, while ensuring all activities are executed with the highest level of safety, security, quality, and compliance.
  • Provide tactical and strategic leadership and direction to maintain the facilities and capabilities of Sites 9930.
  • Ensure staff are trained, qualified, and capable of performing a variety of hazardous operations.
  • Partner with sister departments to support the wider mission of the Explosive Systems and Technologies Group 6640.
  • Partner with Facilities organizations to maintain and sustain site facilities and infrastructure.
  • Develop and articulate a vision for the future of the staffing, facilities, infrastructure, and capabilities in close partnership with group, center, and division management.
  • Develop new customer relationships and create new business opportunities.
  • Partner with other internal and external organizations to conduct important, nationally significant research and development.
  • Advocate for adequate and timely funding is available to accomplish and maintain the mission of the department.
  • Advance the state-of-the-art in explosive testing by proposing Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) work, developing new diagnostics, and interfacing with our primary internal customers and Explosives Center of Excellence partners.

Approximately 10% travel may be required.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's degree in mechanical, electrical, explosive, material science, or relevant science/engineering field plus (4) years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in one of the identified STEM fields plus (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the following:
  • Managing or executing mid to large-scale experiments (preference given to work with energetic material).
  • Managing or leading projects and teaming/partnering with other organizations for successful execution/results.
  • Sandia’s Work Planning and Control process or similar operational risk management process.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level clearance with ability to obtain and maintain higher clearances, including SCI, which may require a polygraph test.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Minimum of (2) years demonstrated experience leading a diverse team in conducting hazardous activity-level (hands on) work.
  • Experience with:
  • Managing projects with energetic and other hazards, including high voltage, radiation, and construction-like work.
  • Managing explosive and/or field operations.
  • Project/Program development experience, skills, or training.
  • Negotiating customer requirements, work scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Working with Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP).
  • Working with classified matter and material.
  • Willingness and ability to become a qualified Explosives Manager of Record, following a prescribed Training and Qualification plan.
  • Good internal and external relationships with partners and customers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance.

About Our Team:

The Explosives Applications Laboratory, Department 6649, engages in research, design and testing of explosive systems, terminal ballistic effects and high-power laser effects research. The department operates Site 9930 which is composed of a variety of explosive firing pads and test facilities. Department staff routinely team with other departments in the group to perform experiments at other sites such as Thunder Range, 9940, 9920, and at off-site locations. The department has expertise in the fields of explosives technologies, instrumentation and field test engineering. This combination of experience and a deep knowledge of engineering and science leads to the department’s ability to rapidly provide innovative solutions to a variety of complex explosives engineering problems for Sandia and NNSA/DOE Programs along with a variety of other government agency customers. Work in this department is often classified and/or sensitive.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
