What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated R&D Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will assist us to explore and develop innovative concepts and new technologies to meet challenging and diverse national security needs spanning across physical protection systems for U.S. national security assets and missions, including fixed sites and transportation systems, and to address the use of and potential threats from new and emerging technologies, such as robotics, unmanned aerial systems, and artificial intelligence.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Build a physical protection related system or sub system test plans that are traced to requirements for system testing.
  • Research/develop/analyze/test advanced and innovative physical protection systems, such as sensor technologies for intrusion detection systems and technologies for video assessment systems, entry control and contraband detection systems, alarm communication and display systems, and associated support systems, such as power electronics, networks, embedded systems, and hardware and software for communications.
  • Design/test custom electronic circuits and assemblies and/or firmware/software
  • Implement the requirements through design definition activities, such as design reports, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Implement test plans either in laboratory, test field, or implementation site.
  • Complete activities related to system level design, engineering, and testing.
  • Design, conduct and document tests, experiments, and results to evaluate sensor technologies/system performance.
  • Apply systematic scientific methods to evaluate commercial technologies to determine their ability to meet sponsor performance requirements.
  • Present at technical design reviews.
  • Interact regularly with internal and external partners from a variety of technical and professional areas.
  • Provide technical advice as requested to DOE’s Office of Security and NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Security on new and revised policies related to physical protection systems.
  • Provide technical support to DOE and NNSA sites in the implementation of physical protection system policies and technologies.
  • Participate in DOE and NNSA working groups related to physical protection systems.
  • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams.

Able to travel up to 25% of the time.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, Public Policy, Political Science, or related STEM field, plus five (5) years' of experience; Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience in major elements of physical protection system components, policy and/or operations for government agencies.
  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Providing successful leadership of completed physical security related or other end-to-end system design and implementation project.
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of the DOE/NNSA and DoD budget and program management processes and policies, including Annual Operating Plan (AOP), NNSA’s Future Years Nuclear Security Plan (FYNSP), Periodic Review Board, DOE O 413.3B Chg. 7, Program and Project Management for the Acquisition of Capital Assets, and the DoD’s Military Interdepartmental Purchase Request (MIPR) and Program Objective Memorandum (POM) processes.
  • Experience in conducting, reviewing, and interpreting analyses of physical protection systems, including vulnerability assessments and security risk assessments.
  • Address changing Program priorities while navigating ambiguous customer direction/requirements.
  • Established network with different organizations within the government to allow external partners to demonstrate lab wide capabilities and critical reach back support.
  • Interacting with high-level external partners, at staff and management levels, including Senior Executive Service (SES), General Officer, and O-6 level)
  • Strategic Partnership Program (SPP) project execution, including project initiation, execution, and closeout.
  • Domain expertise in physical protection systems, such as access delay system design, intrusion detection system development/testing, video assessment systems, alarm communication and display systems, and physical protection system network design.
  • Developing and maintaining a portfolio of R&D related activities.
  • Knowledge of DOE and NNSA Directives, including DOE Orders 470.3C, Design Basis Threat, 473.1A, Physical Protection Systems, 473.2A, Protective Forces, NNSA 470.4-2, Enterprise Safeguards and Security Planning and Analysis Program, and DoD 5210.41M, Nuclear Weapon Security Manual requirements as applied to physical protection system design/implementation projects.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

About Our Team:

Organization 6512, Physical Security Systems Engineering, assesses, designs, tests, and implements physical security systems to protect critical national security assets for interagency and international partners. The Department provides subject matter experts in project management, policy development and revision, risk and vulnerability assessments, intrusion detection, video assessment, entry control and contraband detection, alarm communication and display, response force planning, and modeling and simulation.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
