About the Department:Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provides services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as-needed basis.
About the Position:
The Clinical Administrative Medical Assistant works interdependently with other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality healthcare in the clinic setting. The Clinical Administrative Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by the Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Skills:
Recording patient intake including vital signs, allergies, and medications. Perform essential procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid. Assist providers during procedures and chaperone sensitive exams. Follow OSHA safety practices, including handling of biohazard materials. Maintain a safe environment for staff and patients by proper sterilization of instruments, and cleaning and stocking of supplies. Maintain competency and knowledge in all skills by participating in orientation, ongoing training and annual infection control training and competency review.
Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices:
Safely operate and maintain all laboratory equipment. Perform CLIA waived testing. Proficiency in phlebotomy and universal safety precautions. Accuracy in documentation of laboratory test results. Properly store and handle hazardous materials, cleaning agents, and potentially infectious materials. Upon completion of lab orientation, maintains competency in all laboratory procedures.
Administers Immunizations:
Safely and accurately administers immunizations. Participates in annual safe injection practices training and maintains knowledge through ongoing CDC training. Follows CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations and informs patients regarding required and administered vaccines.
Committee Assignment:
Participates as a member of a SHS committee; attends quarterly meetings, follows through on assignments, and contributes to the maintenance of high-quality healthcare.
Required Qualifications:
Medical Assistant Certification or equivocal training and experience;
Basic understanding of medical terminology;
Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records;
Basic computer knowledge and skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook; and
Excellent communication and organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications:
Healthcare Provider BLS certification;
Experience in a medical office (typically obtained in 1 year), hospital or health care setting;
Experience with Electronic Health Record and Telehealth;
Experience and knowledge of the unique needs of a college student;
Experience with obtaining patient history, vital signs, and chief complaint;
Basic knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements;
Experience patient check-in and patient check-out procedures; and
Ability to prioritize and facilitate cohesiveness and teamwork.
