What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technologist to create designs using a variety of tools, including three-dimensional solid modeling software. The selected candidate will be responsible to create and configure a management of 3D models, detailed drawings, layouts, and illustrations.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop and maintain sandia drawings, templates, and standards, or adapt ours to meet customer required formats.
  • Create new schematic drawings from scratch or make the necessary changes to existing drawings.
  • Read/understand schematics, design prints and technical manuals or documents, or lead the creation on new ones.
  • Work closely with the project manager, project engineers and other CADD technicians to receive instructions, guidance, and resolve design issues.
  • Calculate material quantities at various levels of fidelity based on level of design completion to inform cost estimates.
  • During ideal operations, candidates can expect 50% of their time will be spent generating CAD documents with the other 50% of the time spent in the field performing surveys, field testing, or assisting with PSS implementation that could involve incorporating as-built conditions to CAD documents. During surge design projects, the percentage of CAD time may be higher.

This position will require up to 25% travel.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate will be required to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Aided Drafting, Automotive Technology, Electronics Technology, Network technology, Civil Engineering technology or other similar technology fields involving CADD.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience using AutoCAD® to create, modify, and coordinate engineering drawings for civil, electrical, communications (Fiber), network, mechanical, and/or structural systems.
  • Experience in the following:
  • Architectural/engineering CAD fields like electrical, mechanical, architectural, or pre-engineered specialty security components.
  • Outlining and authoring a complete “plan set” based on the scope of work involved.
  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience drafting building structures, electronic wiring diagrams, power distribution systems, security vehicle barriers, HVAC systems, site development/grading, AND experience creating construction/fabrication documents like engineering design drawings and technical specifications.
  • Proven experience in DOE and DOD physical security system engineering Design.
  • Ability to work independently and self-initiated.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, and highly collaborative environment.
  • Able to embrace and strategically manage changes that impact design documents.

About Our Team:

We are responsible for the engineering design and installation of physical security systems (PSS) across multiple DOE/NNSA and DoD locations. Working closely with our customers, we support projects that typically start with requirements definition and ends with a fully operational PSS. Project scope varies based on government policy, customer requirements/need, existing field conditions, and available resources. Our scope of work may include the planning & executing of site surveys to assess the current PSS effectiveness, development of conceptual or detailed PSS engineering designs, participation in procurement activities, PSS installation, PSS performance testing, technical QA/QC over-sight of others performing the PSS installation, and/or development of post-installation PSS logistics and maintenance plans.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
