As the Tissue Culture Technician, you will be part of CSIRO’s Agriculture and Food Business Unit, joining the Wheat Transformation Unit. In this position you will work on producing transgenic wheat plants for CSIRO research projects. This role is primarily tissue culture, and glasshouse activities, and you will work side-by-side with experienced team members and receive training as required.

Your duties will include:

• Undertake and complete tissue culture tasks under technical direction to meet experiment and/or project demands.
• Maintain wheat and barley plants in glasshouse and growth cabinets at a meticulous standard.
• Maintain accurate experimental records.
• Present results in written and oral communications with the team.
• Maintain confidentiality when working with commercially sensitive information.
• Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
• Other duties as directed.

Location:  Black Mountain, ACT

Salary:  $70k to $90k pa + up to 15.4% super

Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

• Relevant degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Biology or Science.
• Demonstrated knowledge of plant science, tissue culture and plant propagation.
• Good oral and written communication skills coupled with the demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
• The ability to work collaboratively within a team to achieve results.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities whilst meeting tight time frames and organisational goals.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new laboratory skills and techniques.

Desirable:

• Experience in cereal tissue culture.
• Experience in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
• Experience in maintaining and propagating plants in the glasshouse.

Eligibility

Applications to this position are open to Australian/ New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and Australian Temporary Residents who hold a valid working visa for the duration of the specified term without the requirement of sponsorship by CSIRO.
