Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT) Software Services AI/ML Unit is seeking Student Software Engineers for AI/ML positions. Ideal candidates should have experience coding in Python and an interest in generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Familiarity with other programming languages, such as NodeJS or Java, or frontend technologies like Vue.js or React.js is also desirable but not required.

Our team is at the forefront of developing innovative applications leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence. Projects include building a custom administrative web application UI to administer chatbots, deploying chatbots across various domains, and exploring classifiers and other ML techniques for practical use cases. Students will have the opportunity to engage in exciting tasks such as model training, data ingestion, cleaning, and preparation. Depending on their interests and the team’s needs, they can focus on either the machine learning aspects or the software engineering aspects of these projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Completed at least two courses pertaining to programming.
Knowledge of computer algorithms and data structures.
Must be able to work for blocks of at least 3 hours at a time.

Hours:
8 am – 6 pm, three-hour blocks, Monday through Friday. Students can make their own schedule during these hours.

Start Date Requirement:
Students are expected to be available this summer to start the position; not accepting Fall start dates.
Preferences:
Preferences:
Available to work between 12 – 20 hours per week.
Familiar with coding in Python, Node.js, or other languages.
Knowledge of RAG or ML/AI techniques.
