What Your Job Will Be Like:

Sandia invites applicants for an opening to serve as a Project Leader within our remote sensing systems area. This role is pivotal in overseeing the technical and operations direction of programs that enhance our nationally recognized capability in sensor system modeling and simulation, encompassing scene generation, collection segment analysis, and post-processing. The Project Lead will oversee a program aimed at advancing our understanding of enterprise-wide performance, going beyond individual sensor metrics. The successful candidate will manage the development and analysis of sensor models and will work closely with the portfolio lead and technical teams to deliver comprehensive sensor and system performance assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and analysis of models for various types of space-based sensors, ensuring alignment with project goals and enterprise performance objectives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the technical team and stakeholders, ensuring clear communication of project objectives, progress, and outcomes.
  • Facilitate collaboration among technical team members and across departments to ensure project success and integration of diverse expertise.
  • Manage project risks and issues, implementing strategies to mitigate risks and resolve issues promptly.
  • Ensure quality standards are met throughout the project lifecycle, from initial development through to final delivery.
  • Champion innovation within the team, encouraging the identification of gaps and opportunities for advancing sensor system capabilities.

This position will be onsite at our main facility in Albuquerque, NM. The position will be hired as an Engineering Program & Project Lead

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Science/Engineering/Mathematics discipline with an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and DOE SCI.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated ability to execute and deliver technical work products with application of appropriate rigor and pedigree documentation (design/code reviews, technical oversight/approvals, project team concurrence, artifact generation, etc.)
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring of technical staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse teaming environment
  • Background in physical sciences (physics, optics, device physics, orbital dynamics)
  • Experience in program management and program management certification
  • Experience/familiarity with downstream data consumers & data pathways
  • Experience with optical remote sensing
  • Experience with satellite payloads, and/or aerospace programs
  • Experience with constellation analysis
  • Experience with image processing algorithm development
  • Experience with the modeling and simulation of sensor performance
  • Experience processing multi-spectral resolved Earth/limb scenes
  • Experience engineering complex systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills typically demonstrated through technical publications and presentations. Examples can include academic work products, peer-reviewed conferences and publications, internal/external product and/or system whitepapers and technical briefings, test plans and procedures, etc.
  • Active DOE Q security clearance
  • Active DOE SCI security clearance

About Our Team:

The Space Mission Engineering Program Office is focused on developing future program opportunities, engaging with key external communities, agencies, and industrial entities. We team with the broad S&T community to drive the development of technologies that differentiate Sandia as a key member of the Nation’s space community.

We provide solutions to advance space situational awareness and space control. The department’s focus is on developing state-of-the-art capabilities to enable Space Mission Engineering program execution and Sandia’s National Security missions. We maintain expertise in software/hardware architectures, algorithm development, software engineering, object-oriented software design, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and astrodynamics that creates and delivers next generation software and hardware solutions to meet complex national security space missions.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
