Job Description

The Comparative Medicine Core at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida is recruiting a Senior Clinical Veterinarian who provides clinical and surgical medical care for animals used in research and training.  

 

Position Highlights:   

Supervise veterinary staff members and provide emergency and after-hours veterinary care. 

The Ideal Candidate:  

  • Seven (7) years of experience in clinical and surgical medical care for animals used in research and training inclusive of three (3) years of experience in direct report management. 

  • Clinical and surgical experience with transgenic rodents, rabbits, and swine.  

  • Experience veterinary support staff to provide clinical care and support of complex research models and surgical techniques. 

  • Experience collaborating and providing research faculty and staff in preclinical drug discovery, characterization, and development of novel therapeutic agents. 

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holiday clinical care on a rotating basis. 

 

Responsibilities:   

Animal Health and Welfare Monitoring (Direct Research Support) 

  • Provides veterinary care (medical, surgical, and emergency) to laboratory animal species. This includes daily rounds, physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations, procedures, and routine health monitoring. Rotates to provide weekend and holiday care. 

  • Implementation of a health surveillance program. 

  • Develops and implements treatment plans and communicates treatment and follow-up plan with Principal Investigators. 

 

Staff Oversight and Training 

  • Collaborate with Comparative Medicine Core leadership to develop, implement, and oversee veterinary and research faculty training program development, implementation, and recertification. 

  • Participate in interviewing and recruiting new personnel for animal facility. 

  • Responsible for completing yearly performance evaluations for veterinary technician assistants, reviewing and approving direct reports evaluations, and providing input in the decision-making process for pay actions. 

 

IACUC 

  • Provides expert guidance in the areas of veterinary medical care and laboratory animal care/husbandry to facilitate protocol development and laboratory animal research. 

  • Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and participate in associated activities including site visits. 

 

Credentials and Qualifications:   

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).  

  • An active license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state and the ability to obtain a Florida license within six (6) months of the start date. 

  • Must be USDA accredited or able to obtain accreditation within six (6) months from the start date.  

  • Experience serving as an active IACUC member and supporting the post-approval monitoring program. 

  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) residency training boarded or board eligible.
