Job Description

Embark on a fulfilling career as a Research Animal Care Technician in the newly developed Comparative Medicine Core (CMC) at Moffitt Cancer Center. The Comparative Medicine Core oversees and supports Moffitt's animal research and technical support. We are looking to hire research animal care technicians to join our team and ensure the professional husbandry and care of a variety of laboratory animals. Experience in the field will determine the level to be considered.

The Ideal Candidate:  

  • Basic computer and data entry skills. 
  • Basic knowledge of animal care. 
  • Attention to detail. 
  • Must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently. 
  • Exhibit professional behavior in speaking with all staff. 
  • Ability to work overtime and on weekends/holidays as required. 
  • Must be able to be on feet and moving all day. 
  • Exhibit professional behavior in speaking with all staff.  

Responsibilities:   

  • Perform daily husbandry and care of the animals housed in the centrally managed animal facilities to ensure animal welfare with a rotation of weekends and Moffitt-recognized holidays.  
  • Prepare caging, bedding, feed, and water in accordance with practices and procedures for the assigned animals to ensure the maintenance of their health status. 
  • Handle animals using accepted practices and techniques. 
  • Understand regulatory requirements including the Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, Animal Welfare Act and other regulations impacting research animal care. Species include but are not limited to: rodents, rabbits, rats, naked mole rats, and guinea pigs in conventional barrier. 
  • Perform basic treatments and basic technical skills.  
  • At the Senior level, provides technical services for investigative staff. 

 

Credentials and Qualifications –  

Associate Research Animal Care Technician 

  • High School Diploma/GED Required with a minimum of two (2) years animal care-related experience. 
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s preferred with a minimum of one (1) year of animal care-related experience.   

Research Animal Care Technician 

  • High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of four (4) years of animal care-related experience with one (1) year of direct research animal care experience.  
  • Preferred Associate or Bachelor with at least two (2) years of animal care-related experience with one (1) year of direct research animal care experience.  
  • Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Certification desired. 

Senior Research Animal Care Technician 

  • High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of six (6) years of animal care-related experience with one (2) years of direct research animal care experience.  
  • Preferred Associate or Bachelor with at least four (4) years of animal care-related experience with two (2) years of direct research animal care experience.  
  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification desired. 

Florida driver’s license is required, as well as evidence of safe driving record
