Summary

The lab of Dr. Leo Luznik at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, is looking for a focused, driven, and enthusiastic Lab Manager to assist with day-to-day operations. The Luznik lab aims to understand immune response mechanisms in hematologic malignancies, specifically T cell dysfunction and immune evasion in leukemia, with a focus on developing new immunotherapeutic strategies post-chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation. The position offers excellent opportunities for operational management and technical and scientific responsibilities. It is suited for a highly productive and dedicated individual with lab management experience.

Job Duties

  • Acts as the primary liaison for lab communications and collaborate with Dr. Luznik to effectively manage short-term and long-term laboratory requirements.
  • Writes/renews regulatory protocols (IACUC, IBC, and IRB) and submitting amendments.
  • Collaborates on HR duties like performance evaluations, promotions, raises, and employee relations, while ensuring lab members are trained and follow health, lab safety, and animal care regulations, both institutionally and federally
  • Assists in editing grants, manuscripts, proposals, presentations, and other documents, ensuring deadlines for grant application submissions and progress reports are met
  • Handles the upkeep of lab reagents, their databases, and handling requests, as well as the maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation
  • Initiates and manages orders, tracking supplies and expenditures on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, and liaising with vendors while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs
  • Onboards new staff, ensuring training, compliance with institutional, State, and Federal guidelines, and supervising technicians and scientists while being able to command the respect
  • Handles financial activities such as monitoring budgets and communicating with Dr. Luznik about spending levels and spending patterns
  • Trains and supervises research assistants' operations tasks and supporting lab team members with various research/experiment-related tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience, with prior supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degee.
  • Previous research experience in immunology or molecular biology.
  • Previous experience training other people on various protocols. Previous experience with mouse research or human specimens is preferred.
  • Sense of self-motivation, honesty, trustworthiness, collaboration skills, and a passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations and laboratory practices for biology research; demonstrated ability to effectively educate others on these practices.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, adaptability, attention to detail, and strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teamwork abilities.
  • Knowledge of computers and MS Office software
