Job Description

Summary

Under minimal supervision, provides skilled care and handling of transgenic laboratory animals. Primarily working in areas to include: standard housing, biohazard, non-human primate and specialized animal colonies. Also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work, but excluding discipline.

Job Duties

  • Conducts daily health checks and feeds and waters animals under gnotobiotic conditions.
  • Changes cages as scheduled and sanitizes housing areas.
  • Performs technical procedures such as: permanent animal identification, animal restraint and tissue biopsies.
  • Receives animals into and transfers animals out of barrier facility. Records and maintains extensive, accurate records for transfer activities.
  • Maintains accurate colony records and study records.
  • Receives, possesses and fulfills internal purchase order requests.
  • Coordinates with Primary Investigators and other staff to maintain colonies and achieve scientific objectives.
  • Provide routine husbandry and other job related duties as assigned.
  • Detailed record keeping and log documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Provides training and mentorship to less senior technicians.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with computer skills (email, Excel, Word) are preferred.
