Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time Machinist positions for the College of Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU).

The College of Engineering (CoE) established the Innovations Laboratory (iLabs) in 2021. The iLabs is a unique organization that integrates people, infrastructure, and space-assets to (1) provide opportunities for practical, applied, hands-on learning experiences in engineering for users in unstructured and structure environment; and (2) provide necessary and value-added resources that support user project and prototyping needs and services to support the educational and research objectives of the College of Engineering. The iLabs footprint includes a machine and prototyping labs, makerspaces, and student club spaces and includes unique assets such as 3-D printers, multi-axis CNCs, mills, lathes, forging equipment, and woodworking tools among others.

The CoE iLabs Machinist will be a part of the iLabs team. They will be an integral member, contributing toward the successful implementation of operations within iLabs. This on-campus position will be responsible for ensuring machines are functional, providing machine services, coordinating and providing the delivery of tool and machine qualifications to students. They purchase materials, supplies and consumables as delegated by the iLabs Director; coordinate student access to machines and spaces and provide basic tool and machine repair. They support space and equipment relocation and oversee student club activities as necessary to equitably support their group goals. The CoE iLabs Machinist works as a part of the CoE iLabs team that reports to the Director of iLabs.

This important position is key to ensuring our students have access to unique and meaningful experiential learning opportunities as they progress toward graduation.

Key Responsibilities
30% Lab Access & Qualification Program – The iLabs Machinist, in collaboration with others, is responsible for administering appropriate qualifications for access to tools, machines and spaces to students across the OSU community as it aligns with the iLabs Space Access Plan. This includes delivering training to lab users (primarily students) in safe and proper operation of equipment at the beginner level. These administered qualifications require the delivery and oversight of appropriate reviews, reassessing on occasion, and updating space access for its students.
Assesses training needs of lab users with different backgrounds and experiences; assists supervisor in providing appropriate instruction to meet unit/customer goals.

30% Machining and Fabrication – Providing support of design, machining, assembly, and prototyping for service as required for CoE constituents. Use manufacturing equipment such as precision lathes, milling machines, CNC machines, EDM machines, welders, sheet metal shears, brakes and presses. May provide recommendation to use regarding the materials for project. The iLabs Machinist will assist graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff with special project design/fabrication as needed.

15% Machine Repair and Maintenance – Maintain operation of iLabs equipment. Repair machine components and fabricate parts as needed to repair. Disassemble, clean, and perform preventative Maintenance on iLabs equipment and Machinery. May order repair components if fabrication is not feasible.

15% Club and Capstone Support – Student Clubs, and Capstone projects regularly and actively utilize iLabs resources and Space. Under the direction of the iLabs Director, provide support for these efforts leading to their successful implementation. Contribute to activities that foster an environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and fosters a sense of belonging for students and lab users.

10% Other duties as Assigned- Maintain a safe working environment by employing safe working practices, as well as keeping working areas clean, organized, and free of hazards. Properly stacks and stores materials, fixtures, fasteners, tools and chemicals in their correct locations.
What We Require
Some positions in this class may require one or more of the following: Skill in use of the tools and equipment used in the woodworking trade such as table saws, radial arm saws, jointers, drills, etc.

What You Will Need
Experience using metal machining tools.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner that shows respect and inclusivity for all co-workers and internal customers.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
