Job Description

Job Summary
The ADD program is a contract site funded through NINDS dedicated to testing drugs to treat epilepsy. Employees perform technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. The Lab Specialist position can include; calculating, formulating and administering investigational compounds, performing experiments using rodent models, recording observations, collecting samples, performing surgeries, generating reports and supervising others. This position is also responsible for ordering supplies and equipment needed for experiments and maintaining a clean lab space.
Responsibilities
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline or equivalency required; with a minimum of 4yrs. Experience.
Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances.
Experience in handling mice and rats, dosing calculations, administering drugs, collecting samples, surgical procedures and using laboratory equipment.
Ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification required.

Must be adept at identifying and resolving problems that arise during experiments or tests.
Whether it’s a malfunctioning piece of equipment, an unexpected result, must be able to troubleshoot effectively to maintain the integrity of their work.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required
Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
