Summary

The Office of Surgical Research (OSR) within the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery has an immediate opening for a Clinical Research Coordinator II within the Eberlin Lab for Medical Mass Spectrometry.

This position provides day to day activities in coordinating a major clinical study applying new mass spectrometry technologies in cancer surgeries. Many of these duties will include monitoring of research participants, enrollment, and screening.

The responsibilities require experience in clinical research, flexibility, and a detail-oriented individual to work closely with senior research staff. The individual will perform patient screening, plan and schedule study visits, coordinate activities of research staff, assure availability of materials, and prepare reports for the IRB and research funding agencies.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates clinical research activities with clinical care. This involves being the liaison between physicians from multiple specialties, clinic staff, as well as hospital staff, to ensure protocol adherence and conduct the study in accordance with Good Clinical Practices.
  • Interviews, screens and recruits, patients for study; explains process and procedures to educate participant regarding the research study.
  • Collects patient information; processes documents and enters information into a database. May perform Venipuncture (blood draws), EKGs/ECG’s and obtain vital signs on study participants.
  • Adheres to protocol requirements/timeline.
  • Navigates conflicts in scheduling resulting from departmental conflicts, clinics canceled because of COVID or weather, which can then produce a domino effect on treatment timelines, response assessments, etc., and ultimately create difficulties in protocol adherence and timely data collection.
  • Conducts study activities at the Harris Health System and other BCM-affiliated hospitals, as needed.
  • Collects, processes, ships, and maintains paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol.
  • Maintains records and regulatory documents and records for research studies.
  • Orders supplies and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Oncology study experience.
  • Technical knowledge of REDCap, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
