General Information:

JMU Libraries is accepting applications for a Director of Technology. As a director in the Discovery, Access, & Technology (DATech) unit, this position forms strong relationships with other DATech directors to advance the unit’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives. The Director of Technology manages several teams currently comprised of nine full-time classified staff members and four Administrative & Professional (AP) faculty members. These departments are responsible for the design and development of the JMU Libraries web presences, the administration of the Library Services Platform, the administration of physical and virtual infrastructure and storage housed in both cloud and campus datacenters, and the coordination of help desk support for Library staff. Additionally, the Technology department works across all Library units to help bridge existing departmental workflows with the support and integration requirements of third-party platforms and vendors.

The Director of Technology will participate in organization-wide leadership activities and establish highly collaborative relationships with other Library directors managing technical systems and services such as the Director of Classroom Technology Services and the Director of Learning Technology Services.

This is a full-time AP Faculty position offering a generous benefits package with some flexibility in work schedule and telework.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Technology
• Leads the development and evolution of the Technology department’s strategy, ensuring alignment with the Libraries mission, vision, and strategic initiatives.
• Collaborates with Libraries leadership and relevant stakeholders to develop and implement technology-related policies and standards.
• Directs Technology initiatives from inception to completion, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and management of the project portfolio.
• Collaborates across all Library units, JMU IT, external constituents, and vendors to achieve organizational objectives and to identify opportunities for technical innovation and improvement.
• Supervises the Technology teams, providing guidance and support to ensure their success in contributing to Libraries and the DATech unit’s mission and vision.
• Directs the design, implementation, and maintenance of Libraries’ technological infrastructure, systems, applications, and web presence.
• Participates in organization-wide leadership activities and efforts, professional development, scholarship, and service activities, as appropriate.



Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:
• Articulated ability to help foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a team effectively, including setting strategic direction and mobilizing support for broad departmental initiatives.
• Demonstrated proficiency in project management methodologies to plan, execute, and monitor technology projects from inception to completion while fostering a culture of adaptability and innovation.
• Experience analyzing and designing technology solutions and services to meet complex and evolving user needs.
• An understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices to protect the institution's digital assets, user data, and privacy.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Master’s Degree or equivalent education and experience in Computer/Information Science, Computer Security, Computer Information Systems or other relevant disciplines.

Additional considerations include:
• Familiarity with trends in virtual and cloud hosted systems and services.
• Experience in planning and managing technology budgets, implementing inventory controls, and ordering/receiving technical systems.
• Knowledge and/or experience with the acquisition of enterprise level systems and services.
• An understanding of various technologies relevant to library services, such as library services platforms, digital repositories, academic software, and educational technologies.
