Join the exciting world of microbiome research! Help our team characterize microbial communities from complex environmental samples from a wide array of environments by becoming our next Molecular Biology Technician.
Under general supervision, you’ll provide molecular biology support for the Environmental Sample Preparation and Sequencing Facility to characterize microbial communities in complex environments. This work includes, but is not limited to, completing DNA/RNA extractions, sequencing library preparations, and general quality control and sample tracking procedures. The successful candidate will also assist with work related to the maintenance and set-up of Illumina and Nanopore sequencing platforms
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Performing DNA/RNA extractions, nucleic acid quality Assessment, Library Preparation, Sequencer Operation, following standard operating procedures.
- Interacting with Sequencing Specialist to maintain operation of sequencing laboratory.
- Using technical knowledge and skills to conduct established research activities according to standard protocols, including planning new procedures and protocols.
- Adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project with assistance.
- Educating and training users on protocols as needed.
- Ensuring requests for reagent and consumable orders to be placed by Sequencing Specialist are timely and maintains organization in the lab to ensure seamless operation.
- Reporting to Sequencing Specialist if there are any lab maintenance issues or anything that could stall productivity.
- Collaborating with team members by identifying problems and resolving them within well-defined options, leverage previous solutions, if feasible.
- Identifying problems, solutions, and best practices; recommends improvements to Sequencing Specialist or Sequencing Laboratory Manager (if applicable).
- Possibly teaching students or interns molecular lab skills from defined procedures and provide lab tours to visitors.
- Working on-site in Lemont, Illinois 5 days per week.
Position Requirements
- ST1: Associate’s degree and a minimum of 1-3 years of experience, or equivalent
- Effective problem-solving, analytical, and learning skills
- Attention to detail and effective organizational skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Google docs
- Flexibility in dealing with assignments and working on several projects simultaneously
- Ability to think and work effectively in an environment that has rapidly shifting and often contradictory demands and priorities
- Ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to train others
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of UNIX systems and/or shell commands for sequence data analysis
