Position Description
This position is primarily responsible for supporting the HCCM Veterinary Team for programmatic and clinical needs in the care of laboratory animal species including rodents, USDA-covered species and aquatic species.Essential duties include: performing rodent clinical rounds, including making health assessments and administering treatments; working closely with Animal Care, Cage Wash, and Research staff; providing hands-on training in sample collection, animal handling and restraint, ID methods, humane euthanasia techniques, rodent anesthesia, and other relevant techniques as assigned. Provide support for the training program for Research and HCCM staff and assist with ensuring regulatory compliance. Oversee rodent procedural areas within the animal facilities. Assist with maintenance of veterinary medical records. May assist the diagnostic laboratory in the collection and/or reading of samples.
Other duties include but are not limited to: regular attendance at weekly clinical rounds meetings, occasional attendance at lab meetings, and input in development of Standard Operating Procedures.
Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required, with a minimum of two years of experience in the health care or husbandry of laboratory animals and/or veterinary technician experience.Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Animal Science is preferred.
- Familiarity with basic computer applications and programs (e.g. Word, Excel) required.
- Excellent interpersonal and both written and oral communication skills required.
- LAT certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science required within 1 year of hire.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication, both written and oral, with a variety of individuals both within and outside the Institution.
- The incumbent in this position should have a basic understanding of regulations and policies as they pertain to the humane care and use of laboratory animals.
