You will be a part of the High Temperature Chemistry team, contributing to the delivery of research projects related to the decarbonisation of the iron ore and steel industries as well as critical mineral initiatives. Your role will focus particularly on leadership and delivery of a >$5m project developing a novel low carbon-footprint iron ore agglomeration process for Australia’s vastly under-utilised magnetite ores. The role will also involve collaboration and communication across multiple groups and projects, internal and external to CSIRO.


Your duties will include:

  • Practise proper laboratory procedures in compliance with Corporate HSE policy and maintain a safe lab environment.
  • Design and conduct the thermodynamic modelling, iron ore agglomeration and high temperature reduction and melting experiments.
  • Characterize the composition and microstructure of produced iron ore pellets.
  • Identification and definition of research and/or technical problems.
  • Collaborate closely with other researchers within the team, colleagues in the Mineral Resources BU and external researchers.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the area of high temperature processing of iron ores relevant to the Mineral Resources' research activities. 
  • Supervise junior team members, technicians and interns.


Location: Melbourne, VIC

Salary: AU$110k - AU$119k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:


  • A PhD in mineral processing, metallurgy, chemical engineering, or related scientific discipline with a minimum of 3 years of post-PhD research experience in high temperature processing area..
  • Understanding of Iron Ore Agglomeration and Ironmaking processes.
  • Prior experience in conducting high temperature experiments and demonstrated proficiency with high temperature experiment methodologies, data analysis and interpretation.
  • Hands on experience in using material characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM and other techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • Demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.



  • Experience in successfully applying for research grants.
  • Deep understanding of the thermodynamics and kinetics of high temperature multi-phase reaction systems.
