Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Assistant in Instruction in Environmental Studies (ES) works closely with faculty in their courses as well as in field and indoor laboratories in environmental science. The major focus of the position includes teaching and grading for introductory labs in environmental science and preparing laboratory spaces, supplies, materials, and transportation for weekly labs. This work includes coordination with other academic units to secure space and share and access resources as needed. Facility with geographic information systems (GIS) is strongly preferred. Work additionally includes procuring, maintaining, and designing laboratory- and field-based equipment within the environmental sciences and assisting with administrative tasks as needed for the ES program.

Job Duties:

Assist professors in teaching all environmental science lab courses both in the field (all seasons) and indoors.
Prepare laboratory spaces, supplies, materials, and transportation for weekly labs, including coordination with other academic units to secure space, share van rentals, and access resources as needed.
Coordinate transportation and logistics for off-campus, field-based labs of all lengths.
Work with faculty as needed on course design for the laboratory portion of environmental science courses.
Teach individual lab sections (including evaluation of student performance) or assist with lab instruction, as needed.
Support GIS-related labs and curricula.
Procure, maintain, and design laboratory- and field-based equipment.
Enable ES faculty to integrate field and laboratory work into courses beyond the natural sciences, including coordination of transportation and logistics for off-campus activities.
Support research students, staff, and faculty using techniques or equipment housed or used in environmental laboratories.
Train students in the use of specialized equipment and data collection.
Provide logistical, scientific, technical, and administrative support for the summer and academic-year research programs with ES science faculty.
Help coordinate visits by speakers for classes or ES programs. This may involve coordination with other units on campus, communications, and logistics.
Act as a liaison between the ES Program and the Equipment Advisory Group and any other college-wide committees as appropriate.
Assist in the posting of student materials from courses or theses to the college’s electronic document repository.
Maintain the ES Program website.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education

A master’s degree in an environmental science field is required.

Experience

Previous experience in laboratory management and field- and classroom instruction, along with facility in geographic information systems (GIS), is preferred.

Ability to be flexible and learn new tools and techniques as needed, ideally drawing on a breadth of interdisciplinary experience across environmental sciences
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and demands within established guidelines of the curriculum and summer research program.
Ability to perform minor mechanical repair and preventive maintenance of field and lab equipment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with knowledge of scientific writing style.
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff beyond ES and beyond STEM
Hold a valid US driver’s license with a driving record suitable for vehicle rental and coverage under the college’s insurance policy.
