  • Contribute to the success of Australia's RV Investigator's refitting project
  • Leverage your project skills and marine experience in a varied role

At CSIRO's NCMI (National Collections and Marine Infrastructure business unit) our goal is to solve Australia’s greatest challenges by leading Australia’s landmark marine and biodiversity infrastructure and carrying out innovative science.

At NCMI we operate the Marine National Facility, Australia's dedicated ocean research capability on behalf of the nation. From ice edge to equator, the MNF enables world-leading research to increase our understanding of Australia's vast and valuable marine environment, including operating the Research Vessel Investigator (RVI).

The RVI is an advanced ocean research vessel, supporting Australia’s atmospheric, oceanographic, biological and geoscience research from the tropical north to the Antarctic ice-edge.

The RVI will undertake a mid-life refit in 2024 to extend the service life by a further 15 to 20 years. The project involves planning and implementation of the mid-life refit requirements, covering system improvements, upgrades and new capability critical to vessel operations, scientific capabilities, habitability and environmental footprint.

As the Project Officer, you will be responsible for the co-ordination and administration of the scoping, procurement, installation and commissioning activities to ensure the success of the project. It will require extensive consultation with RVI users, the Ship Management Company and CSIRO technical teams.
You will assist in the planning and implementation of the mid-life refit requirements, covering system improvements, upgrades and new capability critical to vessel operations, scientific capabilities, habitability and environmental footprint.

Your duties will include:

  • Co-ordinating the completion of complex technical projects and undertaking development, implementation or standardisation of procedures and techniques.
  • Making innovative contributions to the development of techniques or processes with significant importance on the delivery of the Mid Life Refit Project.
  • Gaining support of influential clients for the goals of the facility, which may involve securing external funds.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor and demonstrating creativity in determining and anticipating client needs.
  • Identifying and adapting quickly to changes in the Project and remaining agile to support the MNF in other ways.
  • Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives.
  • Other duties as directed.

  • Proven ability to co-ordinate and administer complex projects in a dynamic team environment, including the ability to support projects against firm timelines and budgets, and manage competing priorities, to achieve successful and quality outcomes.
