What Your Job Will Be Like:
Are you a creative and detail-oriented person with a passion for applying your skills to meet national security needs? If so, you would be perfect to join our packaging and thin films team. Our team develops a wide variety of custom solutions to meet national security mission needs, including depositing custom thin films and coatings, building intricate microsystems assemblies, and laser machining custom parts and fixtures. If selected for this role, you will become an integral part of the packaging team, with direct impact to our national security mission.
On any given day, you may be asked to do the following:
- Assist with cleaning, organization, and general housekeeping of in several lab spaces, including class 10,000 clean rooms
- Track lab supply and chemical inventory levels and coordinate restocking
- Assist with the operation of the PVD and CVD tools to grow thin films
- Assist with basic equipment maintenance activities
- Use microscopes and other metrology equipment to collect, process, and analyze data
- Conduct searches in the peer-reviewed literature
- Develop CAD drawings and use 3D printers to print custom fixtures
- Assist with data preparation and publication, e.g. statistical analysis and preparing graphs, tables, and figures
- Maintain a well-organized lab notebook
Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- U.S. citizenship
Qualifications We Desire:
- Undergraduate student (sophomore or junior) majoring in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
- Completed basic (freshman-level) Physics and Chemistry courses with labs. Completed or enrolled in Differential and Integral Calculus, Materials Science, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry
- Experience working in a research laboratory
- Experience with data collection, statistical analysis, presenting data, and maintaining a lab notebook
- Fluent with MS Office; experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, and data processing software packages
- Experience with CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, Solidworks, CREO)
- Experience with 3D printing
- Able to work in a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
- Good communication skills - both written and oral

About Our Team:
The Packaging and Thin Films Department specializes in two areas: (1) advanced packaging of electrical, MEMS-based, and optical components, and (2) developing custom thin films for microelectronic, optoelectronic, and tribological applications.
The packaging and thin films team develops custom coatings, prototypes, fixtures, and proof-of concept devices to meet a wide variety of national security mission needs. We have advanced packaging and assembly capabilities that include precision wire bonding of integrated circuits, laser machining, and hermetic sealing, which are used to prototype complex integrated electronics assemblies. Our team also has a wide variety of sputter, evaporative, chemical vapor deposition, and atomic layer deposition systems that are used to probe fundamental materials science in order to develop novel thin films and coatings for tribological, optoelectronic, MEMS, and microelectronic applications.

Security Clearance:
