Summary

The Eye Bank Donor Coordinator I is responsible for processing all donor referrals by telephone and at Harris County Medical Examiner’s office; performing initial screening for eligibility determination; obtaining legal consent authorization for donation; triaging donors for recovery technicians; obtaining medical/social history on donors; communicating with all referral sources; coordinating recovery procedure. Delivery of tissue for scheduled surgeries.

Job Duties

  • Documents all information for each referral on a LEBT-Baylor Referral Form.
  • Logs and screens all potential eye donor candidates at the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office obtaining pre-autopsy release when necessary.
  • Interviews referring hospital/health care professionals concerning medical history of potential donors to determine donor eligibility.
  • Performs plasma dilution assessment of potential donors with information obtained from the health care professional to determine whether or not a pre-transfusion blood sample will need to be obtained.
  • Interacts with immediate family members of potential donors to obtain consent, to complete a medical/social history, and to answer questions regarding eye donation.
  • Obtains all necessary signatures and follows-through on all necessary paperwork prior to tissue recovery including documentation of serology and autopsy results when necessary.
  • Coordinates ocular tissue recoveries for each donor with the Eye Bank Recovery Technician and transportation of ocular tissue procured from outlying locations to the LEBT-Baylor Houston office.
  • Reviews and evaluates donor hospital charts and follows-up on medical histories as needed.
  • Completes LEBT-Baylor Donor Worksheet for each donor procured which may require utilizing the donor's hospital chart, if applicable.
  • Initiates and completes all referral/donor entry in the database.
  • Packs and ships ocular tissue per FDA/EBAA/LEBT-Baylor Policies and Procedures.
  • Packages blood specimens for timely pick-up and shipment to laboratory.
  • Interacts with Executive Director and Medical Director concerning medical histories and accomplishes special projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Maintains excellent customer service relations with referring hospitals and OPO's.
  • Attends Staff Meetings.
  • Participates and complies with established Quality Assurance policies and assists with routine monitoring upon request.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or Health Science.
  • Experience in a tissue bank, funeral home, or working with next of kin.
