Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering - Airborne & Distributed Radar
University of Oklahoma
Norman, OKlahoma
Job posting number: #7222291 (Ref:if134012)
Posted: February 28, 2024
Job Description
As part of our strategic plan, The University of Oklahoma (OU) continues to grow and expand the radar program. Two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor are currently available at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE). We welcome applicants who have demonstrated experience and expertise in radar, with specific areas described below, and are motivated and committed to being an integral part of the research and educational mission at OU.
OU has developed an internationally known, interdisciplinary radar program with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and advanced radar test beds, supported by engineering staff. The Advanced Radar Research Center (ARRC, http://arrc.ou.edu), which serves as the cornerstone of the radar program, has developed principal capabilities including the design and prototyping of radar systems, mobile radar platforms, multi-function radar, phased array technology, digital signal and array processing, and reconfigurable components and architectures. Since its inception, the ARRC has emerged as a world leader in ground-based weather radars and, over the last decade, has made incredible progress in leading major Department of Defense (DoD) research efforts, and, more recently, a burgeoning airborne radar program. Building on this foundation of excellence, OU seeks individuals in the following area.
Position I: Airborne & Distributed Radar Systems
Airborne radar and other sensors require stringent considerations on size, weight, and power (SWaP) but provide tremendous opportunities in atmospheric science (e.g., tropical cyclones, cloud and precipitation microphysics, storm dynamics including the important vertical component, observations in remote regions not covered by current ground-based radars), defense (e.g., synthetic aperture radar imaging, change detection, moving target indication, distributed sensing, RF surveillance), and civilian aviation (e.g., autonomous vehicles and navigation, aviation safety and airspace management, airborne weather applications). The qualified candidate will complement the airborne/distributed radar research already established, enhance currently active collaborations with the School of Meteorology and School of Aviation in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences (CAGS), and strengthen collaborations between CAGS, computer science, and other GCoE Schools to facilitate and accelerate the proliferation of advanced engineering technologies to benefit numerous scientific and mission-driven studies using airborne/distributed radar.
The candidate’s research specialty could include one or a combination of the following areas:
- Theoretical studies on data fusion of navigation sensors to support the development and application of airborne position, navigation, and timing (PNT) instruments;
- Theory, design, and development of distributed radar system architectures to support coherent cooperative sensor networks, distributed PNT, and target tracking; and
- Development of novel RF front-end component/module designs and multichannel array technologies to support integrated low-cost, size, weight, and power RF systems.
The University of Oklahoma: OU is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, serving the educational, cultural, economic, and healthcare needs of the state, region, and nation from three campuses: Norman, Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, and the Schusterman Center in Tulsa. OU enrolls over 30,000 students and has more than 2,700 full-time faculty members in 21 colleges.
Norman is a vibrant university town of around 113,000 inhabitants with a growing entertainment and art scene. With outstanding schools, amenities, and a low cost of living, Norman is a perennial contender in “best place to live” rankings. Visit http://www.ou.edu/flipbook and http://soonerway.ou.edu for more information. Within an easy commute, Oklahoma City features a dynamic economy and outstanding cultural venues adding to the region’s growing appeal.
The position requires an earned doctorate in electrical and/or computer engineering, or a closely related discipline at the time of initial appointment. Serious consideration will be given to exceptional candidates who also possess a record of professional/industrial achievement sufficient for an untenured position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to: (a) contribute to research efforts that facilitate and accelerate the proliferation of advanced engineering technologies to benefit numerous scientific and mission-driven studies using airborne/distributed radar (b) teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Confidential review of applications will begin on April 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates are invited to submit:
1) a letter of interest,
2) a detailed curriculum vitae, and
3) contact information for four references who will be contacted only upon approval from the applicant.
In the letter of interest, the applicant should clearly state which position(s) they are seeking. The letter of interest may contain a research and teaching statement summarizing the applicant’s prior contributions to research and their goals for developing a research program at OU, their past instructional and mentorship experiences, and plans/goals for teaching at OU (including existing and proposed courses) and advising a varied cohort of undergraduate and graduate students.
Inquiries about the position can be addressed to the search committee chair and co-chair:
