Job Description

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) Division seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Operational Support Specialist. Reporting to both the ALCF Division Director and Deputy Division Director, this role is essential in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the division. The individual will be responsible for a variety of supportive activities that are crucial to the daily operations of the division.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Play a supportive role in the division's research and development activities, aiding in the seamless progress of projects within an area of expertise.
  • Act as a point of contact between the division and Laboratory Management, the Department of Energy (DOE), and other sponsors. Facilitate the flow of information and assist in securing funding for the facility, new projects, and initiatives.
  • Efficiently manage and track DOE reporting requests, including user surveys, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
  • Assist in prioritizing strategic and tactical commitments, adeptly handling multiple responsibilities, and helping to balance long-term projects with immediate demands.
  • Act as a central figure in collecting and disseminating information, responding promptly to requests from leadership and external parties.
  • Organize regular team meetings, ensuring smooth communication and effective resolution of issues, contributing to a collaborative decision-making process.
  • Maintain robust communication channels with clients, contractors, and project team members, ensuring clarity and alignment on project goals and progress.
  • Support the division in managing and tracking project progress, identifying potential risks, and working closely with leadership to navigate challenges.
  • Establish and implement efficient courses of action to successfully complete tasks and projects.
  • Develop and maintain key relationships on behalf of the ALCF and represent the division as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in managing administrative tasks, with an ability to handle details and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills, effectively interacting with various teams and stakeholders, understanding and conveying management's perspectives.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing and strategic computing direction is desirable.
  • Effective collaborative skills, with an ability to work across boundaries and share information to promote a unified team approach.
  • Strong analytical skills, with an ability to organize, prioritize, and manage tasks efficiently.
  • Proficient in identifying solutions and approaches to address various administrative and operational challenges.
  • Five years of experience in an operational and organizational management role.
  • Uphold Argonne’s Core Values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork in all aspects of the role.
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Math, Engineering, or Science, preferred.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PA3 or PA4) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • PA3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent.
  • PA4: Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent.
