What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking an electromechanical technician for an exciting opportunity to help stand up an accelerator facility and operate electron accelerators. The selected candidate will prepare the High Radiation Examination Facility (B6530) for operations, assist with procedure development and implementation, and operate the accelerators. In this role, you will help to train others and collaborate with the team at the facility. This team includes a lead technologist operating the facility and several team members who oversee experiments. The overall work will include experimental setup and radiation diagnostics. We have roles in nuclear emergency response missions and participate with Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Lab. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Operate an accelerator following the necessary controls. + Collaborate on efforts at the facility to ensure safety during activity level work. + Operate a forklift and overhead crane. + Set up experiments, including associated electrical and mechanical work. + Assist in the maintenance of the facility. This role will require a valid driver’s license, capability of operating a government vehicle and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + At least three (3) years of accelerator operation experience (particle beam or x-ray) or equivalent. + Basic electrical and mechanical skills. + Basic computer skills (MS Office). + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance. Qualifications We Desire: + Experience developing or implementing Sandia work controls for interlocked systems. + Demonstrated as having a high attention to detail. + Experience working at a remote site (like Tech Area III). + Experience as a radiological worker in the DOE complex. + Associate of Science degree or Bachelor of Science degree in Radiological Science (or STEM). + Current DOE Q-level security clearance. + Crane, forklift, rigging experience. + Radiography (x-ray) experience. About Our Team: The WMD Detection and Threat Analysis department, 6634, performs applied research and development for WMD detectors and associated assessment algorithm and software tool development, conducts field testing and data collection, and provides leadership and support for real world responses to nuclear/radiological incidents. Some department personnel lead and support key aspects of Sandia’s Nuclear Incident Response Program (NIRP) that are led out of 6630. The department has a solid core customer base through NNSA NA20 and NA80 and also supports several key SPP customers including DoD, FBI, and DHS. In particular, the department has an established reputation with government agencies and commercial industry in the field of radiation detection and assessment and trace explosives detection. In collaboration with other departments in 6630, the department has growth opportunities in the development of advanced R&D capability development to support the NIRP and related missions.
