What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a research Manager to lead an existing department in Decision Support Systems (DSS, 6320) - Data Analysis & Exploitation (6321). This department will work closely with the Real Time Data Processing (6324) department to lead our algorithm research and development efforts to produce actionable intelligence from large amounts of real time streaming, remote sensing data.
DSS develops innovative, unique-in-class tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems for national security missions. Your team will be responsible for developing and implementing algorithms and software for real-time image processing, extraction and classification of static and dynamic events from high throughput, high volume data streams. Your team conducts the R&D required to enhance national assets and to develop new or improved mission capabilities. This manager will also be responsible for partnering with 15 other departments contributing to research and development activities in this area. You will also take a lead role in partnering with other Lab organizations on applicable research in data fusion, machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics.
We have significant experience in designing and implementing cloud-computing architectures, advanced networking and computing technologies, visualization and distributed, real-time software. We process terabytes of near real-time data daily, extracting information and providing it to national decision makers. The department will provide core technical competencies for DSS and help enable program execution across Center 6300 Space Mission Program offices, with significant partnership with the Advanced Systems Program Office (ASPO) in 6330 and the Mission Engineering & Geospatial Data Analytics Program Office (MEGASPO) in 6340.
You will also work to establish strategic partnerships with departments in other mission areas to deliver robust software and data analytics solutions for space-based sensing platforms. To that end, you will develop and execute a strategic plan to maintain appropriate staff resources and skills.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Address current program needs and help to develop a future vision and plan for the capabilities of the organization in close collaboration with laboratory partners
+ Own and guide the department vision in researching and developing cutting edge data analytic algorithms
+ Establish and maintain key laboratory and customer partnerships to research, develop, and engineer effective algorithmic and software solutions
+ Lead career development of staff, to include work assignments and assessment of performance, and perform hiring, retention, rewards and recognition for the department
+ Ensure that customer needs are satisfied by managing and coordinating specific work, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements as needed
+ Engage in research and technology communities for identifying future opportunities, increasing visibility of the department’s core capabilities, and identifying, recruiting and developing the next generation of leaders in the discipline
+ Ensure consistent alignment to laboratory standards and guidelines related to safety, security and quality
The position requires occasional travel
Qualifications We Require:
+ Master's, or PhD in a related discipline plus five or more years of experience.
+ You can obtain and maintain a required US DOE issued Q clearance and SCI clearance, which may require passing a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire:
+ Two years of demonstrated leadership experience in a research and development setting: for example, mentored and led an organization/team on goals and objectives; effectively led people, and guided multidisciplinary teams
+ Ability to handle ambiguity and develop strategic direction in a dynamic environment
+ Familiarity with image processing, data analytics, data fusion, Multi-INT, AI/ML
+ Familiarity with modern software development practices/tools. Relevant experience in scientific/engineering software development, testing, and delivery
+ Experience providing integrated engineering solutions in support of high consequence national security missions, to include the inception, elaboration, construction, and deployment of advanced information systems
+ Experience in successfully interacting with and influencing a variety of stakeholders, customers, industry partners, management and staff
+ Consistent track record of writing technical proposals, presenting these proposals to potential customers, and getting work funded
+ Experience or knowledge of Space programs and mission areas
+ Demonstrated ability to work across Sandia's program and organizational structures
+ A history of establishing and maintaining trusted partnerships
+ Demonstrated interest and success in recruiting, hiring, and developing/mentoring new personnel

About Our Team:
The Data Analysis & Exploitation Department (6321) architects, engineers, and develops advanced, one-of-a-kind data processing software and large-scale geographically distributed hardware and software systems for complex, real-time decision support systems using extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of mission and domain specific science and technology. The department also partners to advance the state of the art in data analytics and data fusion. We have extensive knowledge of signal and image processing, Geospatial registration, statistical inference and classification, multiple hypothesis tracking, data fusion and compressive sensing.
Decision Support Systems (6320) develops first-of-a-kind tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems for national security missions. We design, develop, and deploy large networked computing systems that push the state-of-the-art in data processing throughput and real-time action and response. Our research, development, and engineering efforts are focused in areas such as advanced computing architectures, coordinated tasking and control, multi-mission scheduling optimization, supervised and unsupervised classification techniques, multi-spectral phenomenology and characterization, decision and information theory, and activity-based intelligence. We fundamentally develop and improve the way sensing systems customers make decisions.
