What Your Job Will Be Like:
Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) organization is seeking an Engineering Program/Project Lead for Radiation Protection Operations, 4616, for Line Support Team (LST) 6 supporting the functional Mission spaces of Infrastructure Operations; National Security Programs; Global Security; Radiation Science, Technology, & Engineering; and Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Grid Modernization.
The candidate selected for this Engineering Program/Project Lead role will be called upon to provide direct leadership and supervision to the Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) and Radiological Engineers within their line support team (LST) and shall be the RP Subject Matter Expert (SME) and dedicated point of contact (PoC) in support of the RP customers that are part of these dedicated functional Mission spaces for implementation and application of all RP services.
On any given day, you may be called upon to:
+ Direct and supervise the activities of RCTs and Radiological Engineers to ensure the proper implementation and application of all RP services.
+ Provide expert-level advisement to RP customers on the control of radiological hazards in all experimental and production environments encountered in the functional space.
+ Provide expert-level advisement to RP customers in the appropriate application of DOE regulations and orders as well as SNL policy.
+ Provide expert-level advisement to RP management on resource allocations for the functional space.
+ Provide expert-level review of all customer-owned Safety Basis and Radiological Technical Work Documents (RTWDs, also known TWDs or OPs) in the functional space and provide necessary concurrence.
+ Lead RP participation for the functional space on Safety Committees at the corporate and line customer level.
+ Lead RP participation for the functional space on defined work planning committees for their RP customers.
+ Perform expert-level technical analysis on shielding, containment, respiratory protection, nuclear reactions, radiological monitoring and ALARA.
+ Lead RP technical projects and programmatic working groups (WGs).
+ Author technical documents for the implementation of the RP programmatic requirements within the functional spaces in support of line customer projects as well as for the global RP Program.
+ Lead and/or participate in and support internal RP audits and assessments as needed, as well as external audits and assessments as identified as an RP SME.
+ Train RP personnel and line customers alike in the implementation and application of all RP services.
+ Provide overall subject matter expertise in radiation protection for emergency management, recommending and directing deployments of RP personnel and resources during exercises and real emergencies.
Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.
$101,400 - $201,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
+ This posting is at the Senior/Principal level requiring a bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or closely-related appropriate physical science and:
+ 5 years of relevant operational Health Physics work experience to qualify for the Senior level, or
+ 8 years of relevant operational Health Physics work experience to qualify for the Principal level
+ Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.
+ Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
+ Ability to report daily to work locations at SNL in Albuquerque, NM.
+ Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.
+ Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work.
Qualifications We Desire:
+ An ABET-accredited master's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or similar appropriate physical science and (5) plus years of operational Health Physics work experience.
+ Experience providing dedicated operational health physics project management and guidance to Line Customers within the SNL functional Mission spaces.
+ Experience providing dedicated operational health physics support and guidance in the area of radiation-generating device (RGD) operations.
+ Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other Health Physicists and RCTs.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
+ Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility.
+ Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
+ Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between varying types of radiological concerns (e.g., nuclear facilities, waste management, accelerators, bench-scale R&D, etc.) quickly and effectively.
+ Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to and leading a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.
+ Ability to provide expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.
+ Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.
+ Experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment.
+ Experience working in an operational DOE health physics program.
+ Experience continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices.
+ Experience working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval reactors.
+ Active DOE “L” or” Q” level security clearance.
About Our Team:
The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.
