What You Will Achieve

  • As a Scale-Up Engineer/Scientist, you will provide technical support to Product and Process Technologies (PPT) with focus on scale-up issues: safety, heat transfer, agitation, reaction kinetics, distillations, extractions, filtrations, and financial analysis. You will work with teams to develop and implement manufacturing processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

  • Another aspect of your work will be to develop/support fermentation isolation processes. Additional tasks could involve development and support of milling/micronizing and super critical CO2 processes.

  • Part of your time will also be spent supporting existing active pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. This will involve supporting Quality and Operations with investigation of deviations.

  • You will need to work comfortably and interchangeably on the manufacturing floor, in the laboratory, and/or office environments.

How You Will Achieve It

The Scale-Up Engineer/Scientist may be assigned to assist in the development of ad-hoc projects outside of their day-to-day responsibilities. However, core responsibilities include the following:

  • Apply technical and industry-specific engineering expertise to assist scale-up of new processes.

  • Improve and implement robust commercial processes to make API and intermediates; provide technical support to evaluate new processes or technology in the pilot plant as required.

  • Support several existing manufacturing processes as a primary contact person.

  • Execute isolation experiments to refine existing processes or define new processes. These experiments may be at laboratory (small) scale, or intermediate-scale (in Scale-up Lab).

  • Learn how to perform safety evaluations.

  • Gain experience with milling and micronizing, and Super-critical CO2 sterilizations.

  • Act, with guidance, as technical lead for product/process technology transfers.

  • Recommend and implement new/old technologies to solve process related problems.

  • Adapt and respond positively to situations and people to meet changing work unit priorities.

  • Author e-notebooks, reports, technical memo(s), process performance qualifications protocols presentations, reports, and technical papers with minimal direction.

  • Work under general supervision, recommend actions, participate in developing experimental programs.

  • Maintain laboratory and equipment in a clean, safe, functional order.

Qualifications

Must - Have

  • Applicant must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and 6 years of relevant engineering and chemistry experience OR an Associate's degree with 4 years of relevant engineering and chemistry experience OR a Bachelor's with at least 2 years of relevant engineering and chemistry experience OR master’s degree with more than 1 year of relevant engineering and chemistry experience.

  • Strong aptitude for learning process technology and equipment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization including diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

  • Flexibility and ability to embrace and lead change.

  • Ability to work in a high-paced team environment.

Nice-to-Have

  • Good understanding of organic chemistry.

  • Experience in a cGMP environment including specific knowledge of and experience with API manufacturing processing and equipment.

  • QTS experience

  • Understanding of the Kalamazoo manufacturing world.

  • Familiarity with new engineering technologies and the application of these techniques and methods.

  • Awareness of where to look to find relevant information.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Sitting, standing, walking, bending, ability to perform mathematical calculations and ability to perform complex data analysis. This position involves working in a laboratory environment, with limited time in the manufacturing areas, which may include standing for long periods of time and working with a variety of chemical/biological materials.
  • Possible exposure to reagents, solvents, and pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Use of proper personal protection equipment (PPE) is required.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimal travel required (less than 10%)
  • Must be occasionally available to support 24/7 – operations.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $64,600.00 to $107,600.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 7.5% of the base salary.
