Job Description

Summary

The Center for Cell and Gene Therapy is seeking an experienced Staff Scientist immunology researcher with multiple years of postdoctoral experience and excellent communication skills. Previous experience in setting-up, maintaining and expanding cutting-edge research laboratory in the USA is preferable. The position will include tasks like management of a research laboratory (20%), supervision of less-experienced research personnel (30%) and active laboratory work (50%). 

Job Duties

  • Plans, directs and conducts research experiments. 
  • Evaluates and analyzes data. 
  • Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects. 
  • May conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study. 
  • Documents results of experiments and reports to principal investigators. 
  • May supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff. 
  • Plans and organizes administrative research-specific operations of the laboratory of Dr. Wagner, including contributing to decisions on purchasing of devices and services, as well as hiring / evaluation of recruits and less-experienced research staff.
  • Participates in the development and execution of grants in respect to budgets; in particular the overseeing of expenditures of grant monies by performing basic accounting functions for the laboratory.
  • Responsible for setup of the Wagner laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine (organization of lab space, purchasing devices, including technology transfers from previous laboratory site in Berlin-Germany to Houston). 
  • Participates in regular meetings of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy and the Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine as well as other department retreats. 
  • Participates and contributes to national and international scientific conferences on behalf of the Wagner lab. 
  • Organizes of international exchange and coordination of intra/interinstitutional collaborations of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post-doctoral research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in flow cytometry and animal studies (small animals, mice/rats) is a must. 
  • Five years' experience in running a laboratory, including co-supervision of technical work of students of different levels (e.g. undergrad, PhD students and MDs). 
  • Previous experience with setting up a laboratory in the US is preferred.
