Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Instrument Machinist working in a R&D environment. This position fabricates parts using blueprints, sketches, specifications, and written or verbal instructions. Sets up and operates standard and computer-controlled metal working shop machines, including but not limited to lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and similar machine tools. Identifies production steps needed to complete final form and finish. Determines correct machine, tooling, method, feed rate, and cutting speed for each setup. Achieves accuracy of +/- .001" and less frequently to +/-0.0001 inch. Performs miscellaneous duties as required. Must work in a manner which is safe for the employee and others in the area. Has limited interaction with scientific groups.  This job description documents the general nature of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Position Requirements

Employees are responsible for maintaining an acceptable attendance record.

High school diploma and four-year apprenticeship or equivalent and at least 15 years of manufacturing experience at the journeyman level.

Skills & Experience:

Required:

  • Demonstrated capability to program in G-code or conversational language (at least at the machine counsel).

  • Demonstrated capability to self-perform machining set ups for lathe & mill, including devising proper fixturing as required. Ability to customize as needed with manual machining.

  • Demonstrated capability to select, sharpen, and modify tooling as needed.

  • Demonstrated capability to setup and machine single point threads.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and capability using GD&T and machining finishes.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience machining different metals and materials.

  • Demonstrated experience working closely with engineers & customers.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

To confirm demonstrated capabilities, experience and knowledge, Argonne may require on-site testing, rely on candidate references, or a combination of both to evaluate potential candidates.

Preferred:

  • Experience machining weldments and experience working in an R&D shop.
