Job Description

The Babnigg group at the Biosciences Division (BIO) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is currently seeking a molecular biologist/microfluidics scientist to support biological and imaging research activities. The focus of this role will be to participate in the engineering of plant-growth promoting microbes isolated from rhizospheres, construction of biosensors and other synthetic biology tasks.

The focus of this role includes:

  • Supporting ongoing experiments focusing on sensor bacteria development and characterization
  • Genome sequencing
  • Plasmid construction
  • Genome engineering
  • Fabrication and use of microfluidic devices
  • Assistance with data processing and analysis
  • Assistance with report generation

Position Requirements

Required qualifications:

  • RD1: Minimum qualifications includes a Bachelor's degree in related field and 0+ years of experience
  • Proficiency in microbiology, assay development, and HTP laboratory techniques
  • Proficiency in plasmid design and construction of complex synthetic biology circuits
  • Proficiency with confocal microscopy
  • Proficiency with microfluidic device fabrication and their use
  • Proficiency with surfactant synthesis
  • Proficiency with sterile techniques
  • Proficiency with seedling cultivation and setup of seedlings in microfluidic devices
  • Experience with HTP assays
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Notes, etc.)
  • Experience with protein purification and crystallization
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating system, ability to work effectively with commonly used software packages in the laboratory
  • Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to solve complex problems
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of at least one of the following techniques: molecular biology, protein chemistry, enzymology, lab automation, complex microfluidic systems, electronic circuits, synchrotron techniques.
  • Familiarity with microfluidic device fabrication, surfactant synthesis, and creating and running complex microfluidics workflows.
  • Experience in plant science, growing sterile plant seedling in microfluidic devices, and perform colonization with sensor microbes.
  • Knowledge/experience with data analysis packages.
  • Ability to utilize and knowledge of databases and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge in the fields of biological and environmental sciences.
