What Your Job Will Be Like: Sandia’s Space Mission Engineering Program Office (SMEPO) is seeking an experienced space flight systems engineer to lead and support projects to advance national security in space. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on challenging open-ended problems with a variety of experienced team members, have expertise regarding flight hardware design and development, familiarity with DoD/IC communities, and a willingness to work in a high-security environment to support the nation’s most critical needs. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desired: mechanical design, optomechanical design, mechanical analysis, thermal analysis, flight system development, systems engineering. The ideal candidate will also be dedicated to positive teaming dynamics; leading multidisciplinary efforts effectively with the desire to build relationships and act as a trusted partner to internal and external stakeholders. This position provides opportunity to have real impact on national security through the delivery of critical space-relevant missions. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Lead and/or support matrixed, multidisciplinary teams in project execution + Proactively engage with customers to build relationships with DOD and/or IC customers + Develop creative solutions to challenging and partially understood problems + Deliver presentations and updates to internal and external stakeholders + Manage project budget/schedule + Balance priorities across several projects with competing resources + Support to a broad range of customer needs, from quick-turn white-paper responses to hardware delivery + Network across Sandia to leverage a broad range of expertise + Lead or provide the hardware design of flight systems + Mentor junior staff + Work onsite on Sandia’s Albuquerque campus Qualifications We Require: + Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant STEM field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. + Eight or more years’ experience supporting space-based payloads + Two years' project leadership experience with DOD or IC communities + Demonstrated ability to build and maintain customer relationships + Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams + Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test Qualifications We Desire: + Comfort responding to customer requests covering a wide variety phenomenologies + Demonstrated ability to deliver results + Demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse, highly-matrixed teaming environment + Experience implementing and leading SCI and/or Special Access Program (SAP) level technical projects + Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with external and internal partners + Experience developing and presenting proposals to internal and external partners + Strong written and verbal skills + Possess a strong dedication to positive teaming dynamics + Experience in leading and collaborating with experienced, high-performing technical staff + Interest in traveling (~10%) to facilitate customer engagements and strengthen relationships + Active Q clearance, or equivalent; Active DoE SCI clearance About Our Team: The Emerging Flight Technologies department is responsible for realizing state-of-the-art flight systems as a strategic capability for the nation’s security interests. Efforts include: + Enabling development across the entire range of Sandia’s space-based enterprise: Traditional Multispectral, Space-Based ISR, Missile Warning/Missile Defense, Space Mission Architectures, Space Situational Awareness, and Space Control + Rapid deployment of new systems demonstrating new capabilities or in response to emerging threats + Developing more resilient space electronic architectures. Moving traditional algorithms, which were designed to run on high-performance ground stations, to the flight system + Developing novel mechanisms that reduce jitter, improve optical performance, and improve geolocation Posting Duration: This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’.
