College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine, and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary

The Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility at Augusta University houses several state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments, including a Thermo Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid MS (coupled to a Dionex Ultimate 3000 nano-UHPLC), a Thermo TSQ Quantiva triple-quadrupole MS (coupled to a Shimadzu Nexera UPLC), a Shimadzu TQ8050 NX triple-quadrupole GC-MS/MS. Other major instruments include an Agilent 1200 HPLC for protein and small molecule separation and preparation and a Luminex FLEXMAP 3D system Data for multiplexing and high-throughput immunoassays.

A dedicated individual with appropriate expertise is required for operating these instruments, data collection and data analyses on a daily basis, under the supervision of the core director/manager. The core uses mass spectrometry as the key technology for qualitative and quantitative protein characterization and advanced methods for profiling and quantitation of small molecules as well. This core position is also expected to assist in records/protocol keeping, maintaining the working conditions, doing billing services through iLab system and reagents/consumables ordering from vendors. This position requires the knowledge of decent organic chemistry, biochemistry, cell/molecular biology in addition to experience with LC/MS technologies.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Perform quality assessment on submitted samples. Perform protein/metabolite sample treatment and processing, including protein extraction, precipitation, digestion, labeling, metabolites extraction and concentration. Perform sample analysis, including protein identification, comparative proteomic analysis, targeted protein/peptide quantification, metabolites identification and targeted metabolites quantification. Basic proteomic and metabolomics data analysis, including protein/compound database search, protein expression level comparison, quantitative analysis and report generating. Perform billing, budgeting, reagent ordering, equipment maintenance and general lab maintenance. Any other duties as assigned by P.I.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisor experience. OR Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to maintain confidentiality. Detail-oriented. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Pay Grade: R14

Salary minimum: $36,197-$50,675 annually.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
