The Electronic Systems Ops Department is seeking highly motivated antenna/RF design engineer to participate in the development of advanced RF systems, circuits, antennas and concepts for current and future national security applications. The selected candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a dynamic teaming environment, sharing resources as well as programmatic responsibilities across the group. Skillsets vary broadly, including RF/microwave circuit and system design, antenna design, digital signal processing, embedded system hardware and software, digital system design, operational field-testing development/support, and program/project management. As a recognized expert in RF systems and applications, you will work with technical staff and management in developing strategies and roadmaps for RF electronic systems and space architectures. Design challenges include highly miniaturized electronic system design, communication system architecture, ultra-low size, weight, and power (SWaP) hardware, ultra-low-noise receivers, and signal extraction/classification techniques in low Signal-to-Noise-Ratio environments. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Contribute to conceptualization, requirements development, circuit design, modeling/simulation, and product realization. + Experience in one or more of the following disciplines: + antenna design, + RF/microwave circuit design, + RF/microwave system design. + Design, Prototype, characterize, and troubleshoot RF/microwave and antenna hardware in a state-of-the art laboratory facilities. + Provide mentoring, coaching, and guidance on mixed-signal (RF, analog, digital) electrical designs being delivered in operational systems. + Find innovative ways to enhance our processes and products. + Apply strong multi-disciplined team leadership skills, military acquisition and product delivery knowledge, and an understanding of rigorous engineering design processes to successfully address national security mission needs. + Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with interest and ability to interact with internal and external customers + Must have the ability to work both independently and on a team. + Some travel for technical interactions and field testing is required. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time. Qualifications We Require: + Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or relevant STEM discipline, plus 5 years relevant experience. + Educational background and/or relevant experience in at least four of the following key areas: + RADAR System Design/Analysis. + Digital Signal Processing. + Proficiency in a high-level scripting language (i.e., Matlab, Octave, and/or Python). + Automatic Feature Extraction and Signal Classification. + Detection and Estimation Theory. + Forward Error Correction. + Embedded Software/Firmware development. + Firmware implementation of signal processing algorithms in FPGAs, DSPs, and/or GPUs. + RF Communications Systems. + Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level or DoD TS security clearance required. Qualifications We Desire: Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following: + PhD degree in relevant STEM discipline preferred but not required. + Experience in or exposure to all “key areas” listed above, with emphasis on Antenna Design. + Familiarity with electromagnetics modeling, design, and tuning of unique form-factor antennas. + Experience with commercial RF/microwave circuit simulation and antenna design tools such as HFSS, ADS, CST, Momentum, Genesys, FEKO, IE3D, etc. + Experience with mixed signal digital, RF/Microwave, and analog hardware design including schematic capture and layout of high density printed wiring assemblies incorporating micro-controllers and FPGA’s. + Knowledge of Digital Communications, radar, and/or EW systems and principles. + Familiarity with Defense (DoD), Special Operations (SOF), and Intelligence Community (IC) organizations. + Familiarity with space hardware and associated organizations. + Experience with high consequence electronics applications (ex. Space, weapons, and/or other high-security applications). + Expertise in architectural design and engineering with a proven record of strong job performance. + Top-notch verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling. + Active DOE Q or DoD TS clearance. + Active SCI clearance. About Our Team: The RF & Electronics Systems Center (Center 5300) provides key electronics systems deliverables to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence and military programs across Sandia and the nation. The Strategic RF Systems group (Group 5370) supports the Nation’s technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for global highly-reliable communications and novel advancements for future electronics. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products. Electronic Systems Ops Department (Department 5375) strives to: + Provide advanced hardware designs for strategic flight and ground systems. + Develop talented staff and partnerships to advance national capabilities. + Engage with partners to link communities and expertise for electronic components.
